Can I get breast augmentation if I have a bad neck?

I want to get breast implants. I have three cervical bulging discs C3 C4 C6 and yes I have pain. I am wondering if breast augmentation is possible for me and what are my choices if it is.

Hello pinkahboo. Most likely yes, but this will depend on a few factors. For instance, the amount of pain that you have and whether you're on chronic pain medications may play a role on the ability to get breast implants. The stability of your cervical spine will have to be assessed by your physician to see if in fact your body can handle the additional weight of breast implants. Finally, your plastic surgeon may recommend a size smaller than you desire in order not to exacerbate your neck pain and bulging disk condition. If you're otherwise healthy then you would be a better candidate for surgery, but if you have other medical conditions such as heart disease,etc., you may be counseled against having elective breast surgery. The best place to begin is by having a consultation with a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Best wishes, Dr. ALDO.

Your bulging disc are not a contra-indication to getting breast implants. However I would not get very large ones. I would not get breast implants over 300 cc in your case.The larger the implant the worse your back pain can become.

Hi neighbor:Cervical discomfort is not a contraindication to breast augmentation. If you have motion of position restrictions, we would need to know preoperatively. If you are in need of an augmentation, it is unlikely that your innate breast size is a contributing factor to your neck discomfort. Properly selected, modest sized implants can be a  tremendously satisfying experience. However, for patients on chronic pain meds, we often use general anesthesia because IV sedation can be insufficient. Also, we would ask your pain specialist to coordinate and to manage your pain meds post op. So go ahead and make your appointment with your board certified plastic surgeon. In general, there is not a contraindication for a patient with neck pain to have breast augmentation surgery. That being said, every case is individual and considerations should be made if you receive chronic pan management. Your post-operative pain may need to be co-managed with your pain management specialists in case your current medications are stronger than what is typically prescribed by your plastic surgeon.  Larger breast implants may cause increased neck and back discomfort, so selecting a more modest size may be in your best interest.  An open conversation in which you voice these concerns with your plastic surgeon will allow for a complete and detailed plan for you to move forward successfully.

Beast augmentation will not be affected by your cervical disc problem, but your anesthesia might be difficult or even dangerous. Depending on the choice of anesthesia your neck might need to be extended in order to insert a breathing tube and this could be dangerous for your neck. I would recommend a pre-operative anesthesia evaluation to see if this might be an issue.
