How will Restylane hold up if you practice martial arts? Jiu jitsu?

Question

I am considering restylane under the eyes and on the cheeks. However, I practice a martial art called jiu jitsu. In this form, your face very often gets squeezed by an opponent. You often end up between someone's legs or arms and they apply great pressure. So, would a filler on the cheeks and under the eyes hold up if your doing this for a couple hours a week?

Thanks for your question. I usually recommend that patients wait at least 24 hours after an injectable filler treatment before resuming exercise. However since your jiu jitsu sounds like there is potential rough contact to the treated area, I would probably recommend waiting for 5-7 days to ensure that any swelling or bruising has had a chance to subside. After your injections, jiu jitsu shouldn't have any long term effects on how long your filler will last. It's always best to discuss your concerns with a board certified physician who can discuss the treatment with you in more detail.

You just have to make sure to take a week off your training or work out and then you should be fine. as long as you can do this, it should be fine.

Thanks for this question.Restylane in the cheeks is relatively easy to shape. I suspect a blow to the cheek will likely change the shape. It will make it more diffuse i.e. flatter.The orbit is relatively protected and likely the Restylane under the eyes ( tear-troughs ) will maintain its shape, but one can't be certain.

Thank you for your question.  I always advise my patients to avoid exercise for 24 hours after the injection.  Since you are participating in a more vigorous contact sport, I would advise waiting 5-7 days before returning to Jiu Jitsu.  The tear-trough area is quite sensitive and you will experience some swelling and/or bruising for approximately one week after treatment. Best,Ariel Ostad MD PC

Each injector will have different guidelines post treatment. Typically, injectors will advise between 24 hours to 1 week off before resuming more physical activity. Consult in person with an experienced and expert physician injector to understand your options.

I train BJJ and for that reason would avoid filler in my face.  The mashing on the face has a different effect on the filler than any other type of exercise since it is direct compression.  There have been no formal studies on this but that is just my opinion.  I would not get filler in my face while training.  If you do, to take precautions, it should be an HA filler in case it needs to be dissolved and should be injected deep, and I would advise taking off several weeks after injection (which I know isn't hard to do).Thank youDr Schwarcz
