Bulge/shelf on hip after liposuction - what is the cause? (photo)

Has anyone experienced what looks and feels a bulge/shelf on the side of their butt after lipo?? This wasn’t there before the procedure. I’ve always been pretty peachy; I had lipo performed on my upper outer thigh region along with a tummy tuck. Now I have this butt bulge that’s really disturbing me! This is not where compression garments or underwear rest of me.

Swelling post-lipo can persist for months, so it's important to be on the right after care protocols. In addition to compression, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and radiofrequency treatments, lymphatic massage is highly effective in the prevention of fluid buildup, scar tissue, inflammation, and infections. Lymphatic massage also decreases the chance of irregularities, lumps or bumps; accelerates healing and minimizes downtime; and, following a liposculpture procedure, can help further contour the abdominals.

I recommend that my liposculpture patients receive lymphatic massage treatments every day for a week following their procedure; twice per week for the following month; and then once per week until healing is complete.

I'm sorry to hear of the issues you are experiencing.  Uneven contours can result from several causes.  Some are swelling, uneven compression, or potentially a hematoma.  It is best if you visit with your surgeon for an evaluation of the area to determine the appropriate treatment.

Hi and welcome to our forum!Unfortunately we don't have information regarding the length of time since your procedure, making it difficult to interpret the "bulge". Early on, it can be due to uneven swelling or uneven compression. If of significant size, there is concern for hematoma or seroma. Late in the course, it could be residual fat, fibrosis, a "dogear" from the termination of the abdominoplasty incision, or reinjury to the area.It is best to undergo reevaluation by your plastic surgeon for reassurance.
