Cheek Lift, lower blepharoplasty, brow lift.
I know this is quite a lengthy review; however, as someone who has read countless reviews before committing to surgery, I hope this may benefit others considering surgery with Bella Vou.
At 46, I have been using filler and Botox for the past five years; however, after a discussion with my aesthetic practitioner, she was becoming concerned that I was at risk of “overfilling” my face. She explained that the areas I was concerned about were not treatable with fillers and that it would take surgery to fix this. As someone who doesn’t like the “filled” look, I agreed that it was time to consider surgery. As a normal, working-class woman, money isn't abundant, and I admit (to the dismay of my practitioner) that I was considering surgery abroad, purely based on costs.
I started to do some research and contacted a surgeon outside the EU. From the outset, it didn’t feel right. The initial contact for these companies is often through WhatsApp, which seemed to work; however, as the conversations progressed, I became highly sceptical. I was in touch with a man who asked what surgery I would like and to send photos. I did this, and within five minutes, he came back to me and said he had spoken to the surgeon, and I had been accepted for the surgery. This was the first alarm bell! I continued to ask questions; each time, he told me he had asked the surgeon before replying. However, I don’t believe he had even spoken to him once—I believe they just get people over there. The final straw was when I asked what type of facelift the surgeon did. I was told this would be a deep plane facelift due to my “face shape.” I then decided that the whole setup was incredibly dodgy.
I was disheartened by this; however, I asked myself one question. The reason I was opting for surgery was because I was unhappy with the effects of gravity on my face; why then would I risk it being made worse at the hands of these cowboys? Also, if there were any complications, I am in a foreign country—what would happen if I needed to see the surgeon again? The money spent on travelling would be equivalent to surgery in this country. Also, the NHS are extremely reluctant to fix issues from elective surgery outside of this country, and rightly so. After this thought process, I decided to look closer to home.
Numerous things resulted in me having my surgery at Bella Vou.
When I first started looking at UK surgeons, a significant number of them wanted a fee for a consultation with a surgeon. Some of these surgeons try to justify this, stating that a consultation with no fee is more likely to make a person go ahead with surgery when they might not if they had to pay. I disagree with this. I think it’s the opposite. Bella Vou does not charge for a consultation. I believe the charge is a form of pressure to commit, dressed up as some ethical decision. I would feel more pressured to commit to a surgeon I had paid X amount of pounds to, rather than one who didn’t charge. Unless you have unlimited funds, it would become very expensive very quickly if you weren’t happy with the surgeons you were paying consultations for. This was the first thing that made me consider Bella Vou.
The second was the absolute transparency on price throughout the website. Again, looking at other surgeons, the prices often stated “from” or “POA.” From experience, you contact these people to ask the price, and you are given some awful sales pitch before you are given the price thirty minutes later; they then proceed to spam you with follow-up emails—a process I cannot stand. With the clear prices, I knew straight away if I could or could not afford it. And there was not one “hidden extra”.
I then contacted Bella Vou and went from there. They are clear that you can see the surgeon initially remotely; however, they will not proceed with surgery without seeing you in person—how it should be!
I was given the details of a potential surgeon (the wonderful Hagen Schumacher) and encouraged to research him and his work—I believe they even sent me some links for this. I then went to Bella Vou for my consultation with Hagen and a Patient Coordinator. Before the consultation, Bella Vou states that you will not be seen until you fill in a detailed form, which asks all kinds of questions and evaluates your capacity to consent and your psychological state/reasons for undertaking the surgery.
The consultation could not have been any more thorough. Hagen is an absolute gent, incredibly knowledgeable and explained everything in depth, took measurements and photos, and explained all potential risks of the surgery. Despite there being no charge for this, there was not even a remote sense of it being rushed, and there was zero selling throughout—in fact, it was the opposite. Hagen stated that all my measurements (of my brow) were within the parameters of “what is defined as current beauty” and did not necessarily require surgery; however, he stated that it is elective surgery, so we then discussed the best and least invasive brow lift that would address my concerns.
The Patient Coordinator then takes over and books dates for surgery. There is a cooling-off period, and you must have a 2nd pre-surgery consultation with your surgeon; this was done remotely. This was to confirm the surgery to be done and check I still wanted to go ahead. After this, I was contacted by a nurse who completed a risk assessment with me to ensure I was medically fit for the surgery.
A week before, I was sent a detailed email with all the requirements for me pre-operatively. Whilst they stated there may be a charge at this point, the option to back out from the surgery was still available. There was never any pressure to commit.
On the day of the surgery, I met with my Patient Coordinator and was given my own suite. These rooms are immaculate and have everything needed, including an en suite. I was given a bag with beautiful toiletries, chocolates and a card—everything had been considered. I was then given some more tests by the nurse to ensure I was fit for the surgery. I was also visited by the anaesthetist who introduced himself and asked me questions. Hagen came to see me, and then I was taken down for surgery. Understandably, I was very nervous, but the theatre staff and Hagen were wonderful in supporting me till I was zonked out.
After five hours of surgery, I came around in my suite. I was initially in a lot of pain and had severe swelling, resulting in both my eyes being closed—I was unable to see. The nurses, again, were outstanding. They worked tirelessly to help me get my pain under control, which took a fair bit of work! Despite the surgery only being booked for the day and with most staff having gone home, there was not a hint of them trying to get me discharged, and they were happy to stay and chat with me and ensure my pain was under control before I left. I cannot thank them enough for this. I wish I could remember names, but I was a bit out of it!
The next day, I was still unable to see. I was initially intending to go home but decided to stay at a local hotel for two days so I was nearby and could rest. My Patient Coordinator called me the next day and said that I could go and see them if I needed to. Hagen also spoke to me on the phone and said he was around for the remainder of the day if I had any concerns. The swelling was just a result of the surgery and my propensity to bruise easily; however, my mind was put at ease, and not once did I feel alone. Again, I was contacted the next day to see how I was.
I then attended an appointment to have my stitches removed. The nurse who I saw, as with all the staff, was just exceptional. What I notice about Bella Vou is that everyone seems to genuinely care; it doesn’t feel contrived in any way, which makes all the difference. I was given some painkillers and finally went home. A few days later, I received the most beautiful bouquet of flowers and card from them. I am now over three weeks post-op, and whilst I have a way to go, by following all of the detailed aftercare advice, I am well on my way to full recovery.
I cannot fault Bella Vou at all. Every single touchpoint for the customer has been considered; not a thing was missed or overlooked, and I felt entirely confident they and Hagen would be there to support me post-operation as much as I required. They absolutely deserve their “outstanding” CQC rating (something else that drew me here) and demonstrate a masterclass in customer service. They deserve to do well with this approach.
As stated, this is a lengthy review, but please, if you are considering surgery, do your homework. Hagen is a master; his testimonies on here speak for that, as do I, and I will be back for more surgeries in the future.
I cannot recommend them highly enough, and you will be in the best possible hands choosing Bella Vous for your surgery.
