Can a deviated septum make my smile crooked? (Photo)

Septoplasty surgery is designed to maximize your anatomical nasal airway. It usually has minimal implact on the external nasal appearance - this would require rhinoplasty. Asymmetrical smile will likely be unchanged.

A deviated septum  causes nasal obstruction  in the back of the nose blocking air flow. A septoplasty will straighten the deviated septum(bone and cartilage) but will have no bearing on the look of the nose and will have no bearing on the smile. Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed when there is CAT scan documented evidence of sinus polyps causing chronic sinusitis, loss of smell, facial pain, pressure and headaches.

A deviated septum can certainly make the nasal tip crooked.  Smiling contracts facial muscles and can exaggerate the asymmetry or crookedness of the nasal tip.  In some cases a submucous nasal septal resection can correct this deviation of the nasal tip.  However  in some cases a rhinoplasty is also necessary to restore the tip to a straight position.
