Skin thickness and faceliftsThe skin is an important component in rejuvenation of the face. Facelifts are designed to remove excessive skin but are not designed to change the quality of the skin. Patients benefit when the skin is also resurfaced or treated which can change the texture and crepiness of the skin. Ideally, a facelift surgeon will be an expert in both face lift anatomy as well as skin rejuvenation of the neck skin as well.
Your skin quality can affect the results and long term outcome of a facelift, however, it really should not be a factor in being a candidate for a facelift. In all skin types, the facelift surgeon needs to take care of the skin and raise a flap thats not too thin. Thats part of the surgery and surgeon skills, irrespective of the skin type.
Poor skin quality can affect the success of a facelift (rhytidectomy) and neck lift to some degree. However, you can still have a facelift and you will look significantly better than if you had not received one.To improve the look of your skin after a facelift, I'd recommend concomitant laser treatments or chemical peeling to resurface and thicken the skin by stimulating the production of new collagen. Also, fat grafting can help the facelift look natural and rejuvenating. As for the neck, if your skin is very thin and you notice sagging after your necklift, you may get some relief with a nonsurgical skin-tightening treatment such as ThermiTight. All of these issues will be addressed and potential solutions discussed when you consult with a facial plastic surgeon. I hope this helps.
Skin thickness is important in facial rejuvenation surgery. However, an experience facial plastic surgeon should be able to perform facelift on all type of skins. Less tension must be applied to a thin skin during facelift surgery. You are a good candidate for a lower face and neck lift, if you have sufficient lower face and neck laxity. This procedure will improve you jowls and create a stronger jawlines for you. I recommend that you find an expert facelift surgeon in your area that can perform your facial rejuvenation under local anesthesia and twilight sedation. Without a doubt local anesthesia and twilight sedation is safe and well tolerated by patients. Compare to the traditional facelift procedures that are performed under general anesthesia, the post operative complications associated with local anesthesia cases are lower and risk of bleeding is minimized. General anesthesia carries a higher risk for older patients and for the patients who have multiple medical conditions such as CAD or HTN. The key to a successful facelift procedure using local anesthesia is selection of the right patient by the surgeon and his or her comfort doing these cases. Not every surgeon is comfortable performing face and neck lift using local anesthesia.
Thank you very much for yourquestion. While the thickness of each patient’s skin can vary, this will rarelyimpact their ability to have a facelift or neck lift. I recommend scheduling aconsultation with a board certified plastic surgeon, experienced with faceliftprocedures. At the time of the consultation, the surgeon will carefully examinethe quality of your tissues, determining the best procedure(s) to achieve youraesthetic goals.
Hello and thank you for your question. The best advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation. Patients of varying degrees of skin thickness can undergo a facelift. If good technique is used, this can be done with minimal scarring and can result in a natural look, notover-done look, with rejuvenation of your face. Make sure you specifically lookat before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgeryperformed by your surgeon and evaluate their results. The most important aspectis to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend that you seekconsultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluateyou in person.Best wishes and good luck.Richard G. Reish, M.D.Harvard-trained plastic surgeon
Patients with thin skin can still have facelift surgery but the surgeon needs to be careful when elevating the skin and maintaining a certain degree of thickness of the skin flaps to avoid complications. With care and an explanation of the risks of temporary irregularities facelift surgery can be adequately performed
The thickness of facial skin and the fat layer immediately underneath the skin varies from patient to patient and facelift procedures are possible in almost all skin types. There are rare connective tissue disorders which may exclude safe and effective performance of the surgery and your surgeon will address this if relevant for you.
There is nothing such as the skin being too thin or thick for a given procedure. Skin thickness varies from patient to patient and does not preclude from a given surgery. It may affect the surgical results, though, as well as affect the risk of complications. For some procedures, thin skin is advantageous, for others, it's disadvantageous. You should see a board-certified surgeon for a consultation. Best wishes!
having thin skin should not matter if you wish to have a facelift. Make sure you see a board certified Plastic Surgeon. they have the most experience.
