Can I go under anesthesia with Wolff Parkinson White syndrome?

I was born with it and didn’t know I had it. I don’t have any complications at all. I didn’t even know I had it until I went for an ekg. I’m schedule for a bbl in March and wanted to know if I can go under general anesthesia.

Interesting scenario. At the very least you should have a consultation with a board certified anaesthesiologist and a cardiologist before considering going under general anaesthesia. Treating WPW usually involves a minimally invasive procedure that can permanently correct the problem, so I would suggest looking into getting it treated before going under a general anaesthesia. Safety should always come first!

The presence of WPW syndrome increases the risk of cardiac dysrhythmia during the operative procedure. If adequately controlled with medication or after cardiac ablation, surgery may be considered. It is a decision to be made by your cardiologist after thorough evaluation to ensure that you are in optimal medical condition and that it is safe to undergo BBL, perhaps performed in a hospital outpatient setting.Visit a board certified plastic surgeon for evaluation and discussion.Best wishes...

This condition can be pretty serious and it’s definitely something your plastic surgeon Hass to know about before surgery. Hopefully you had an in person consultation and your plastic surgeon is aware. I would guess almost all plastic surgeons would ask you to get clearance from the cardiologist before having the surgery. It’s not up to plastic surgeons to determine if you’re an appropriate candidate for surgery based on your heart conditions and it’s certainly not our decision if general anesthesia is appropriate. Your cardiologist may suggest using certain types of medication. Because this is not my specialty I’m not going to give any thoughts in regards to preventative measures to not have a flareup during surgery.The main thing is to communicate with your plastic surgeon and if you have a cardiologist talk to that person sooner rather than later.and this is a cardiology issue not a plastic surgery issue.unfortunately cardiologists usually don’t spend much time on real self.Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
