Hi, at about five months post-op, one of my incisions flared up and I was back in my medical bra. The incision opened up and wouldn't close, so my surgeon went in and restitched the skin. It turned out the capsule never formed at the bottom of my implant, so it was pushing directly on the skin. I trust my surgeon, but I wanted to understand how rare this is? The hope now is that the capsule forms completely now, but is this possible? Have you seen cases like this? Thank you!

Answer: Open wound? I am guessing that you are very thin? Sometimes when you are very thin, there is very little subcutaneous tissue between the skin and the implant. Sometimes this subcutaneous layer composed of mainly fat, thins out causing the implant to sit against skin directly. Wound opening tends to form thick scar so hopefully once closed the scar in this area will thickenBest

Answer: Capsule This is not rare since it can take several months to a year for the capsule to form completely around the implant. If the capsule forms early and quickly, this is usually trouble and becomes too thick. A capsule will form around foreign objects in the body. If your implant was large and heavy and/or you have very little breast tissue, the implant will thin out what lower tissue is present and can erode through and open the incision. Again, this is not rare and mostly is seen in small breasted women who choose implants too large for their tissue.
