I’m sorry you had a bad experience with previous Liposuction. Consistent quality Liposuction results is in reality more difficult than most people realize. The number of plastic surgeons approach mastery of this procedure is in fact quite small. As you know, firsthand the procedure can potentially leave people disfigured, and for some people this can be permanent. Your best option at the outcome would include a combination of liposuction and fat transfer. Correcting poorly done previous Liposuction with fat transfer varies in regards to success based on a number of variables. The most important variable has to do with how aggressive the primary procedure was. in order for grafted fat to remain viable and not be absorbed there has to be a sufficient layer of host tissue to support the grafted fat. In areas previously overt treated with lip selection there is sometimes insufficient tissue to support large volumes of grafted fat. When that’s the case, the patient may need a few separate procedures to get as sufficient improvement. Work is far more complex and difficult than primary Liposuction. Attempts advising Liposuction outcomes can potentially make things worse unless you’re working with a plastic surgeon who has sufficient skill and experience. Finding the right provider is the most important variable in this process is not easy. In your case, you’re most likely need to vet providers for not only Liposuction skills, but also for fat transfer skills. I recommend you begin the process by making a list of local providers who seem to have an interest or extensive experience with both Liposuction and fat transfer. Next schedule in person consultation with providers on that list. To find the right provider, you’ll most likely need to have multiple consultations. There’s no correct number of consultations needed to find the right provider. The more consultations you schedule the more likely to find the better provider for your needs. The biggest mistake I see patients make is having only one consultation and then scheduling surgery. Having only one consultation, more or less eliminates the ability to choose a better provider. Bring pictures of your body, the same way plastic surgeons take before and after pictures and use those pictures as reference during the consultation. The surgeon will of course examine you, but when it comes to reviewing before, and after pictures and discussing what your needs are, it’s helpful to have images of yourself for reference. During each consultation, ask each provider to open up their portfolio and show you their entire collection of before, and after pictures of previous patients who had similar body characteristics. The surgeon may not have examples of previous patients who had the exact same defect, but you need to confirm that they can do Liposuction of this anatomic area well And also that they have experience with fat transfer to correct Liposuction disfigurement. When it comes to assessing fat, transfer results recognize that early fat transfer results can look very impressive but do not in anyway represent long-term final results. Whenever a patient is reviewing before, and after pictures for fat transfer, you need to always confirm the exact timeframe of when the after pictures were taken in relationship to the date of surgery. For fat transfer after pictures should always be at least three but preferably six or more months out from surgery. Never assume, always confirm. Highly experienced surgeons should have access to hundreds or preferably thousands of before, and after pictures to choose from. Surgeons, who don’t have an impressive collection of before, and after pictures should probably be crossed off the list. For complex unique situations like your own, I personally would probably schedule four or five consultations before considering selecting a provider for revision surgery. Be cautious of providers who think this is easy to fix or those who don’t recognize the challenge with restoring contour after poorly done, Liposuction. Sometimes only small improvements are possible and then some Cases, revision surgery simply isn’t going to make enough difference to justify the procedure. To make a quality assessment will require an examination. I suggest you contact your previous providers office and ask them to forward all of your before and after pictures and a copy of your previous operative report. These will be helpful to any new provider taking over your care. When in doubt, slow down and schedule more consultations. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
