Is it normal to still feel pain 5 months after breast augmentation?

I'm now 5 months post opp and I'm still feeling pain and twinges in both my breasts. They are heavy, achey and generally uncomfortable when I sleep which makes sleeping a constant battle. They don't hurt 24/7 but a few times throughout the day I find myself having to stop what I'm doing as one or both my breasts are causing discomfort (or pain). The pain also comes from my rib cage and can make me breathless due to shooting pains.

It’s unusual at 5 months post breast augmentation surgery to have pain.  You really should not be having any pain at this point.  If the pain is coming deep within the rib cage it can be a condition known as costochondritis which occurs frequently after breast augmentation surgery, usually due to an increase or change in exercise routine.  Taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory such as Advil will help in addition to decreasing the exercise routine.  It is still advised to see your surgeon to rule out any other issues.

In general, for most, discomfort less about three months. Often during the second month one gets small twinges and funny sensations following surgery. One would expect discomfort to improve by five months but sometimes it takes even longer.  Have your surgeon give you a good exam. It is possible you may have recommendations for breast massage.

Some occasional breast discomfort can be normal however painful breasts especially at night is not. I would recommend that you follow-up with your plastic surgeon for an examination. The pain you are describing is not normal after 5 months.  Without an exam and more information it is difficult to tell you more.  I would recommend that you contact your surgeon and follow up soon.

After having breast augmentation you should expect an initial recovery time of 4-7 days.  After that time, many patients feel good enough to perform basic functions or work a non strenuous job as long as the support bra is in place.  Some common side effects include swelling, bruising and tenderness during your recovery time. During recovery time it's important to restrict yourself from strenuous activities for at least 2-3 weeks.  As a few weeks go by the scars will start to fade.  The locations of the scars will depend on the incision site and implant placement used during the surgery.  To reduce your chances of noticable scars, be sure to follow your surgeons recovery instructions.

Hi, Meganamy.   Occasional twinges and shooting pain are not uncommon after breast augmentation.  They are usually from nerves healing.  Although most of nerve pain diminishes after several weeks, it may last several months to year.  Since your pain seems to be severe, making you breathless, please contact your plastic surgeon to be evaluated.  Good luck.

Thanks for your question. Capsular contracture usually causes this tipe of pain. I suggest that you visit your plastic surgeon so he/she can see you in person and tell was going on

It is not necessarily normal but it is not that uncommon. The best approach is to see your surgeon to determine the cause of the pain. Sometimes the cause is a nerve caught in a suture. So a repeat examine is needed to determine the cause.
