Can I have Botox when I have rosacea?

Question

Hi I have rosacea I feel it has aged my skin for some reason. I am also prone to allergic reactions on my face and I have had a few reactions throughout my adult life. I recently had an allergic reaction to finacea recently. I have always looked younger than my age but with the onset of rosacea, a period of severe stress and and illness I feel more wrinkles appearing. My sister has rosacea and the results are great. What would you recommend to minimise risks if I I did opt to have botox?

Yes, you can have botox with rosacea.  It is not a problem.  The skin condition does not mean that you can't have botox to the face.

Botox can treat rosacea if injected properly.  I suggest a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist.  However, the best first line treatments are Vbeam or Excel V.  Best, Dr. Emer.

There is no published information that states there is contra-indication to using Botox in the face of rosacea. Make sure you have a consultation with a certified professional before undergoing the procedure as they can discuss with you the expectations and risks, but the rosacea should not keep you from being a candidate for Botox treatments.

There should be no problem with botox and rosacea.  anecdotal reports (doctors talking to each other) have suggested that botox can be used to treat rosacea and we have done this with limited success, but it has not gotten worse

Thankyou for your question.I have many patients with rosacea having botox treatments.
There is no reason you cannot have botox . It does not make the rosacea worse. All treatments that are used for rosacea including low dose antibiotics with anti-inflammatory effect , topical creams  and lasers can be used at the same time .If you are having laser in the areas you are having botox , you should keep in mind any swelling that occurs with the laser can potentially effect the spread of the botox so I would perhaps space these one week apart .

Yes, there are no current contraindications regarding the administration of botox for a patient who has rosacea. However it is important that you consult with a board certified doctor such as an oculofacial plastic surgeon to make sure your botox is appropriately placed. I would recommend getting off any blood thinning medication example of such are Ibuprofen, fish oil, and flax seed oil. Consult with your doctor prior to stopping medication such as coumadin or plavix. This will help decrease bruising. It is also important after administration of botox to minimize activity and rubbing of the area for approximately 4 hours.

Thank you for posting this question as there are a lot of patients who have rosacea and who get Botox treatments.There is no absolute or relative contraindications to get Botox injections if you have rosacea, unless it is being injected through actively infected skin.

There is nothing in the literature that indicates that the use of botox would have any contra-indications with rosacea.  It might actually help the situation - however, it will not make it worse.We hope that helps.

Rosacea is a disease of the midfacial skin.  Injection of botox into the muscles of the upper face is very unlikely to have an effect on your rosacea.   Even if your skin is extremely sensitive to creams and medications you should be able to tolerate botox since its action is below the surface of the skin.

Rosacea is not a contraindication for getting Botox and in fact, some studies suggest it may actually improve the redness and flushing.
