What causes ptosis as a teen?

There are several different causes for new ptosis.  It is important to have a full examination and a review of your medical history.  It is hard to say what is causing your ptosis without this information.  I would see a board certified oculoplastic surgeon for an evaluation.

If you did not have ptosis before age 13, it is acquired.  There can be a number of reasons for this and the basis for the ptosis is one of questions that an oculoplastic surgeon would seek to answer before proposing surgical correction.  If the ptosis is mild, you may elect not to have surgery.  If the ptosis is stable to may not be motivated to see a specialist to answer this question.  However if you want an answer, I recommend a consultation with a fellowship trained oculoplastic surgeon.  The American Society for Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery maintains a regional directory on their website listed below that can help you find a highly qualified surgeon close to home.

Hello Ptosis1996, Thanks for the question. Without examining you, physically feeling the tissue, assessing your desired outcome, taking a full medical history, and discussing the pros and cons of any further treatments it is difficult to be comprehensive.There are several causes of ptosis and you should be examined to rule out any potential causes secondary to other medical conditions.  Many cases are just isolated ptosis and can be corrected with surgical intervention.I would suggest finding a board certified surgeon in your area who has experience with ptosis repair. Good luck, Dr. S
