Why do I get always get lumps after filler that don't go away? (Photo)

Question

I have been getting lip filler on and off for the last 5 years by different injectors using differenf brands of filler. Everytime I have experienced small bumps that dont go away even with massaging. I have had injectors try and fill around the small lumps with success of hiding them. I recently had my filler disolved and waited a month to refill with a new injector. Again, I experienced lumps that would not go away even 4 weeks later. Is my body reacting with the filler and creating lumps?

There can be some swelling and/or lumps after lip injections which can last 1 to 2 weeks. You can apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 minutes at a time, in order to help decrease swelling and even out the lumps. If you're unhappy with your final results, you can have the filler dissolved with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer​​

In our experience, temporary lip filler treatments can lead to areas of permanent scar tissue. Sometimes, lip fillers can cause small minor salivary glands to become more visible and palpable on the lip, typically the lower one. It is not clear whether or not your body is sensitive to all hyaluronic acid products. This would be a terrific question for your doctor. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Dr Joseph

It's difficult to know why you are getting lumps after your filler treatment.  Often they are a result of injector technique, but that doesn't seem to be the case for you since you consistently have the same issue regardless of injector.  Have your injectors confirmed the bumps are filler? Did they disappear when you had the filler dissolved?  Are they always in the same place and of the same size? You may wish to have them evaluated by a board certified plastic surgeon.

Some people do report, long-term at persistent volume irregularities after the use of fillers, that is not explained by persistent product.
Likely these lumps represent scar tissue from the body‘s reaction to uneven injections or minor trauma. There is really no treatment to make will go away and this is one of the risks patients take when they have fillers done. I cannot stress the importance of going to the most talented and experienced providers. If lumps, efficiently than direct surgical, excision could potentially be an option. I suggest discussing with your providers.
