How does Dysport in your DAO muscle affect your smile?

Question

I had 3 units of Dysport injected into each DAO muscle. It gave a very nice upturn of the corners of my mouth, however, now when I smile, my lower lip moves upwards, instead of downwards.Is this a normal response of DAO muscles being injected?

Without an in-person evaluation this is difficult to answer, but yes, this sounds like it is due to placement. Dysport results resolve in 3-4 months. In the mean time, venus legacy treatments can soften results. Best, Dr. Emer

Neuromodulators like Dysport work by affecting the injected muscle's ability to contract.  The muscles on the face are small and in close proximity of other muscles that have different functions.  If the wrong muscle is inadvertently injected or if the product migrates, your results can be impacted.  This is why it is important to have treatment with an expert injector. Hi,DAO stands for Depressor Anguli Oris - this is a "depressor" muscle and if too active, this gives a frowning appearance, pulling the smile downwards. Naturally, over time the activation of this muscle can create deep marionette lines. When Dysport is injected into this muscle it becomes relaxed allowing for your smile to pull upwards instead of downwards. This will soften marionette lines and create an "elevated" smile. This is a normal and expected response to injecting Dysport in this area.

Without pictures, it's difficult to say, but this could certainly be due to your Dysport treatment. I suggest following up with your injector. The good news is Dysport results aren't permanent and will resolve in 3 or 4 months. Hope this helps.

yes, from what you’re describing I believe that is the result of the temporary paralysis of the DAO muscle which functions to depress the corner of the mouth.  If you don’t like it, it will wear off in 3-4 months
