How does Dysport in your DAO muscle affect your smile?

Question

I had 3 units of Dysport injected into each DAO muscle. It gave a very nice upturn of the corners of my mouth, however, now when I smile, my lower lip moves upwards, instead of downwards.Is this a normal response of DAO muscles being injected?

Without an in-person evaluation this is difficult to answer, but yes, this sounds like it is due to placement. Dysport results resolve in 3-4 months. In the mean time, venus legacy treatments can soften results. Best, Dr. Emer

Hi,DAO stands for Depressor Anguli Oris - this is a "depressor" muscle and if too active, this gives a frowning appearance, pulling the smile downwards. Naturally, over time the activation of this muscle can create deep marionette lines. When Dysport is injected into this muscle it becomes relaxed allowing for your smile to pull upwards instead of downwards. This will soften marionette lines and create an "elevated" smile. This is a normal and expected response to injecting Dysport in this area.

Without pictures, it's difficult to say, but this could certainly be due to your Dysport treatment. I suggest following up with your injector. The good news is Dysport results aren't permanent and will resolve in 3 or 4 months. Hope this helps.

yes, from what you’re describing I believe that is the result of the temporary paralysis of the DAO muscle which functions to depress the corner of the mouth.  If you don’t like it, it will wear off in 3-4 months

Neuromodulators like Dysport work by affecting the injected muscle's ability to contract.  The muscles on the face are small and in close proximity of other muscles that have different functions.  If the wrong muscle is inadvertently injected or if the product migrates, your results can be impacted.  This is why it is important to have treatment with an expert injector. It is best that you follow up with your injector to discuss your options and goals. There are a few muscles in the chin that when activating pull in different directions. You could possibly need dysport injected into the chin, however it is had to determine without an in person exam.  Best wishes.

Tiffany,What you are describing is the effect of injecting the DAO.  The DAO pulls the corners of your mouth downward (toward your neck) when you smile, which seems to have a good result when you are at rest.  What you need to decide, however, is whether this is worth the "cost" of changing your smile.  Good luck!

The result that you describe is a possible outcome of treatment in this area. However, with proper placement of Dysport there should be no change in lip positioning, only an elevation to the corners of the mouth. In order to avoid this unintentional outcome, I prefer placing Dysport slightly behind the DAO and low on the jawline where the DAO attaches.
