I have a dermal on my chest above my sternum as well as my nipples pierced. I know for the surgery I'd have to remove the nipple rings but would my dermal have to be taken out as well?
Answer: Will I have to remove my dermal if I were to get implants? Thank you for your question and for sharing your photograph. Your dermal would not have to be removed in anticipation of surgery and could be covered once in the operating room. As you mentioned it would be best to have your nipple rings removed. Hope this helps.

Answer: Electrocautery and Body jewelry/piercings Metal piercings/jewelry represent a burn risk when left in place in the setting of electrocautery.Electrocautery works via conduction of current from the instrument through the through the target tissue and into a grounding pad. This heat energy can be used for cutting and cauterizing tissue and is a more hemostatic alternative to traditional cold knife techniques. Theoretically, metal left in place can lead to burns if the current is conducted by the piercing/body jewelry. Thus it is safest to remove these prior to surgery. They can be immediately replaced post op.As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon.

Answer: Pre op care Typically you have to remove all piercings before surgery. This has to do with safety in the operating room. Since electric coagulators are used to control bleeding, exposed metal is generally best avoided. You should ask this question at your consultation. Good luck!
