How soon do I start using bio oil after surgery?

Question

Had surgery yesterday and everything going fine but not sure if I should be using bio oil this early or should i wait until my structure knots removed in a week. Was thinking of using to rub on tight breast tissue not scar at this early stage. To early or get started?

Thank you for your question. We normally advise every patient to wait at least 6 weeks, however, every surgeon has their own protocols. Speak with your chosen surgeon. All the best,

Silicone gels or tapes and bio-oils are usually administered to prevent the surgical scars to become hypertrophic and hence achieve the best scar quality. When to use is totally the preference of the surgeon. In my practice for breast and body aesthetics, I usually use a special water resistant strip on the incision lines during surgery which are left in place for a month allowing the patient to take shower immediately the day after surgery. This is of major comfort to the patient as he/she does not need to change any dressings and can freely return back to routine life. After removal of the tapes 1 month post surgery, I usually administer silicone gels and tapes for controlling the scar quality.

The use of any topical medication after breast augmentation should be done only upon the direction of your own surgeon. In my opinion these are of no value.

Thank you for your question.I would recommend using a vitamin oil on the scars after three months post surgery, but it is always a good idea to moisturise the rest of the skin on a regular basis soon after surgery.

Hi, I reccommend to use silicon gel cream (or bio oil) after 3-4 weeks if the wounds have healed and do not present any opening. Of course if you had any complication such as infection, wound breakdown or opening, you will need to wait until after complete healing which may vary.

I usually leave the steristrips for 10-14 days then starts to apply moisturising cream. Bio oil is one of the cream to use but also any other moisturiser like E 45 which contains natural ingredient.

Every surgeon will have different post-op advise regarding scars.Bio Oil is good for general skin moisture and can help improve the appearance of stretch marks but i wouldn't recommend it for my patients to use on their scars.I always recommend silicone based scar treatments for your incision scars. For the first few weeks your scar is supported with tape which keeps it fine and narrow and these are usually kept in place for 6 weeks. Nothing should be applied to the scar during this time and only at 6 weeks with the guidance of your surgeon should anything be put on the scar to help with its healing.

Thank you for your question. It is not advisable to use any oils or creams near your surgical incision until it is fully healed and then only after approval by your surgeon. They are best placed to advise when your scar is ready. Usually this is between 3 and 6 weeks after surgery. It would also be better to check with your surgeon before rubbing it onto the breast tissue away from the scar although this is less of an issue. Day one after surgery is way too early for any treatments like this as you risk irritation and contamination of the wounds.

Before applying any topical oils to your scars, they must have fully healed and free of complications. Most PS would say after 6 weeks you should be OK to use Bio oil or equivalent.
