Hard lumps in top and lower lip after Juvederm lip filler? (photo)

Question

I just had Juvederm for a lip filler. The swelling has gone down and now I have two big lumps and one small lump on my top lip. I've been massaging them and it doesn't seem to be working. It's very noticible, especially when I smile. It's also very uncomfortable. What can be done to fix this problem??

Hi and thank you for your question! Having lumps and bumps during the first few days after filler in lips is common. Even though you indicated that the swelling has gone down, it can still persist for up to two weeks and you shouldn't do anything until the residual swelling is completely gone. If what you see is indeed swelling (very likely), massaging it might actually slow the healing process. Please keep an eye on it and as long as all you see is just painless swelling, allow two weeks and at that time if issues exist, please see your physician for reassessment and revision if needed. I'm not sure when you had your injections. It can take 1-2 weeks for final results. I would wait a full 2 weeks before judging the results. If it is after the two week wait, you can have the filler reversed with hyaluronidase.I hope this helps!

Deaer firefly1754,Juvederm has significant swelling post injection. I would follow up with you plastic surgeon but typically I tell all my patients to wait a full two weeks.  Generally at 2 weeks they are happy and glad they didn't dissolve.  Dissolving is unpredictable as well.Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS

I'm not sure when you had your injections. There can be some swelling and/or lumps after lip injections which can last 1-2 weeks. You can apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 mins a time, in order to help decrease swelling and even out the lumps. If you're unhappy with your final results you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer

Hi,Thanks for the question!Sorry to hear there are some issues. I suggest stop massaging as you can irritate your tissues. Please contact your physician and this can be an easy fix by injecting some low dose dissolving enzyme to soften the lumps.Hope this helps!

Hello Firfly1754,You indicated you just had Juvederm but did not say exactly how long ago.  It is very common in the first week or so to notice areas of firmness.  This more relates to where the needle was inserted to inject product and is the result of the slight trauma caused by that.  This would be expected to resolve on its own.  However, if it has been a few weeks already then that is likely product that was placed in large amounts in one location.  After a few weeks, massaging the area won't do much and the only way to improve that is with time or have it dissolved.  Since you have concerns, I'd recommend you follow up with your injector for evaluation. You didn't tell us exactly how many days it has been since your lip augmentation using Juvederm. The swelling and some of the associated symptoms of the treatment may last as long as two weeks. You should be massaging your lips while rolling them between your thumb and index finger. This should be done a few times a day. You may also apply moist, warm compresses to the lips as that will help with the hardness and tenderness. Good luck from New York City

Thank you for sharing your photos and your concerns.  It typically takes 2-4 weeks for the swelling (edema) to resolve after being injected with a hydrophilic hyaluronic acid filler such as Juvederm Ultra or Ultra Plus.  When injected properly, you will never feel the actual filler after the edema resolves.  If you are past the swelling phase, return to your board certified cosmetic dermatologist or cosmetic plastic surgeon for evaluation and treatment with hyaluronidase.  He or she can artistically dissolve a small portion of the filler to "feather" your results and you will no longer have any lumps. Best of luck,Suneel Chilukuri, M.D.Houston, Texas
