Is it okay to get a bikini wax a few days prior to tummy tuck?

Question

I am concerned about shaving the area of the incision site, since it will be below my underwear line. I don't want to worry about ingrown hairs or not being able to shave for awhile. Would waxing the area a few days prior be okay? I prefer waxing since the hair won't grow back as fast.

Thank you for your question.  This topic is surgeon-dependent, but in general, I would not be against waxing the bikini line area if it is about a week before surgery.  Ask your surgeon for his/her preference.  The concern is that, if performed too close to the surgery date, skin irritation from the waxing may introduce bacteria to the incision line and increase the risk of infection and subsequently wound healing problems.  Good luck with your surgery.Mark K Markarian, MD, MSPHHarvard-trained Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon

I do not advise shaving nor waxing right before a TT. I believe there is an increased risk of an infection.

If you are planning to get a bikini wax, then you should probably have it done a week or so prior to surgery.

I would check with your surgeon for his/her preference.  If you waxed about a week before surgery that should be sufficient.  You simply do not want to chance introducing bacteria when so close to surgery.

You should not do anything that could cause a folliculitis just before
your operation as this may increase chances for surgical site infection.  If you get a bikini wax, wait for several
days before proceeding with surgery to make sure that the area is not inflamed.

Thank you for your question.  I would prefer that do not have a bikini lacks a few days before abdominoplasty surgery.  The bikini wax campus folliculitis or irritation of the hair follicles which could contribute to an infection of the abdominoplasty incision.  I would prefer that we wait at least  a week to 10 days after a bikini wax prior to abdominoplasty.
