Very sensitive to adhesives. Any recommendations of alternatives to paper tape for scar healing? (photo)

Question

I'm 8 dpo for a TT, MR, BA with lift. My incisions seem to be doing well but I'm noticing redness and itching where my paper tape is applied. Any ideas for an alternative treatment with similar results? Thanks!

When sensitive to one adhesive you could be sensitive to others so avoiding adhesives makes sense or you could test a strip on your arms to see if there's a reaction before applying on your incision. They also have silicone strips without adhesives or silicone gels that are painted on.

Thanks for your inquiry and pictures. At this early a stage your plastic surgeon needs to be involved in the discussion.  Ask if your surgeon to give you or suggest where you can get narrower steri-strips instead of one inch tape and if you should go a few hours a day without the tape, or use an entirely different strategy, etc.  Good Luck, you have a nice early result.

From the posted photo it does appear your skin is sensitive to the paper tape.  I encourage you to contact your surgeon.  She/He can advise what alternative is recommended for you.  If any further medications are needed that can be addressed as well.

Wow-- you are sensitive! I would either not use any tapes at all, or a gel/ointment for scars.  To get the irritation to settle down, you can try some benedryl cream. Good luck!

Thanks for the great question and I'm sorry you're having this problem. As the others have already said, tape sensitivity is very common. I put all of my patients on a silicone gel scar therapy program starting one week after surgery. The silicone gel is much easier to apply than the silicone sheets and patient compliance is a lot higher with using it.
