How much weight should I expect to lose from Lipo during Mommy Makeover? What are the risks of the procedure?

I'm 38 and in good shape but still have a little extra weight to lose from the last pregnancy. (15 pounds) I'm wondering how much weight I should expect to lose from the liposuction during a mommy makeover. Also, if done by a board certified, experienced plastic surgeon, then how safe is a mommy makeover? Thanks!

On average my patients lose approximately 10 lbs. following a mommy makeover, but that number can vary widely depending on the particular patient.  Skin removal may result in dramatic improvements but only a small change on the scale.  Breast implants actually add a small amount of weight.  Liposuction results in substantial weight loss once the swelling subsides.  Good luck!

Remember that liposuction is a body contouring procedure, NOT a weight loss procedure. Best to be as close to your goal weight as possible so you get the best possible results. If your mommy makeover is done by a board certified plastic surgeon, you should be in good hands. Best to chose your surgeon based upon experience and prior patient results and make sure you both are on the same page as far as expectations. Also remember to fully disclose any pre-existing medical history and medications you may be using that could hamper your recovery. Good luck!

Far more important than deciding if MM is for you is the skill and experience of your plastic surgeon. Choose your surgeon rather than the technique and let him explain why one technique may be better than another and if you need a tummy tuck. Many board certified plastic surgeons provide a free first time consult and you should take advantage of that! The main change will be in the shape/sizeof the parts you wish you change.

A board certified plastic surgeon is the best choice to help minimize risk and maximize positive outcomes for your surgery.  Read reviews and ask questions of surgeon to help you determine who is the best person to help you achieve your surgical goals.  The mommy makeover procedures will help you to regain some of the shape that is changed through pregnancy, but it is not a weight loss surgery.  You can anticipate losing a few pounds, but it is the difference in your overall silhouette where you'll see the biggest difference.

Thank you for the important questions.  You are wise in achieving your long-term stable weight prior to proceeding with tummy tuck surgery. As you know, this is not a weight-loss operation and most patients will experience a 2 to 4 pound weight loss with excision of tissue and/or liposuction surgery.  The majority of serious complications that may occur with tummy tuck surgery occur within the first 2 weeks. These may include deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, infection, bleeding, and even death. Fortunately, the potential for these types of major complications are very small, assuming careful selection of plastic surgeon, anesthesiologist, and fully accredited surgery facility. Other types of complications that are more likely (but still much less than 10%) include superficial incision line healing problems ( wound healing problems), seromas, abdominal wall asymmetry, abnormal scarring, unsatisfactory cosmetic result…
