I have lumps in my top lip, above my lip, under my nose after 1 syringe of Juvederm. What do I do?

I have lumps in my top lip and the skin above my lip (under my nose) after being injected with 1ml syringe of juvederm ultra! This is not the first time I’ve had lip fillers. The first time I got juvederm volbella for a more subtle look and remember having lumps but not nearly this bad. Injector said not to massage them as it will ruin the shape but they are getting worse. Suggestions? Will these go away?

Hi and thank you for your question! Lumps and swelling following filler injection are quite common and they are all expected to fully resolved within 2 weeks, so if you had the fillers recently, you can wait. If it has been beyond the two-week period, you should do a follow up with your physician and it can be revised or dissolved if needed. This advice is only for painless lumps with no other signs or symptoms and if you are experiencing redness, tenderness, pain or heat, then you should go back for follow up immediately. I'm not sure when you had your injections. There can be some swelling and/or lumps after lip injections which can last 1-2 weeks. You can apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 mins a time, in order to help decrease swelling and even out the lumps. If you're unhappy with your final results you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer

Swelling from lip injections can persist up to two weeks.  If it has been longer than this since your treatment I recommend visiting your injector for an evaluation.  If necessary hyaluronidase can be used to dissolve the product.

You do nothing. I agree with your injector, I would not massage or bother the areas that were treated. The product needs time to get comfortable in it's new home. You are probably experiencing some mild edema from the injection. The hyaluronic acid will begin to soften usually by week 2 or so. Everyone's body reacts a little differently, but it is normal to feel the product under the skin in the beginning. I hope this has helped you and your derma-filler journey. Thank you for your question.  Swelling and unwanted fullness can occur after treatment with fillers.  These side effects typically resolve fully by 2 weeks postprocedure, which is when you will see your final result.  If you continue to have concerns, please be sure to see your injector for an in-person reevaluation in order to determine the best course of action.  Hope this helps and best wishes!

If you recently had injection of filler and you feel a lump, then it might be able to  be massaged down if it is filler. Best to check with your surgeon.

Thank you for your question. Yes, the lumps should settle down after a couple weeks - once all the swelling begins to dissipate. Bumps can be caused due to a variety of factors - what might be best is to give it time, and then if there are still lumps that you are not satisfied with you can have them dissolved with hyaluronidase. You may need multiple treatments with hyaluronidase to get all of the lumpiness out, but it is safe and relatively effective. After 6-9 months, of course, most if not all of the Juvederm product will be gone - so it's really just about how much it bothers you. Best of luck!

Feeling a lump is normal with most fillers, especially with the Juvederm family - the main thing is that a lump is not seen. Now, massage can be performed - 2-3 min,  2 to 3 times per day. This should settle within 2 weeks. I would then give it another week where you do NOT touch the area to cause more inflammation and then see how things go.
