I had a chin implant approximately 25 years ago. My plastic surgeon died tragically soon after in a plane crash. It looked horrible from day 1 and since he passed I never had it fixed (it's huge for my face). What are my options for fixing it now? I assume it would need to be a replaced? Would I look for someone who performs reconstruction? Could it be eroded in me? I'm not sure the material used. I understand cost varies, is there a ball park I can expect? Thank you.
Answer: What to do with your 25-year-old chin implant? Exciting 6586, Your 25-year-old chin implant certainly can be addressed. I'm sorry to hear about the surgeon that performed for you is now passed, but with proper execution and planning surgical treatments can be rendered. It may take more than one surgery to achieve desire result. Once the implant is removed the bone may need contouring as well as needing additional bone placed to restore contour. At some point a sliding genioplasty may be the treatment of choice to get due to the outcome that you desire. I would have in person consultations with oral and maxillofacial surgeons and/or plastic surgeons that have expertise in this area. Best wishes! Answer: Chin implant replacement Thank you for your question. When it comes to replacing a chin implant, it is always useful to know the details regarding the implant that is already in place. It is quite likely that yours is a silicone implant, and although it has a tendency to erode slightly into the bone, it still allows for good replacement surgery to be carried out. If you want to find out about the projection of the current implant, an ultrasound scan or an MRI scan can provide this information. During a consultation, it is possible to use computer imaging and simulation on photographs in 3D to have a better appreciation of the width and projection you would like to achieve, as both contribute to the perception of size. The characteristics of the chin are different when viewed from the oblique view and the side view, as they are assessed in relation to different structures of our face. 3D imaging allows a better understanding of the proportions that you may find suitable. Once you have identified how much change you are contemplating and have finalized obtaining the information regarding your current implant, it is possible to use either a custom-made implant or a Medpor implant that can be carved to suit your features better.

Answer: Most chin implants are made of rubber or silicone and may be easy to remove. Some chin implants are not made of silicone however it may be more difficult to remove. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your chin, a reputable facial plastic surgeon should be able to advise you regarding removing it and possibly replacing it with a smaller implant. A CAT scan can sometimes be helpful in determining the shape, size, and material that was used. Wishing you well. Sincerely, Dr. Joseph

Answer: Chin implant removal and options First, I would get a CT to determine the proper positioning of the existing implant as well as the current facial appearance. In some cases the implant can be removed and replaced with a different implant. A better option may be a sliding genioplasty and simultaneous removal of the chin implant. It is likely that the implant was never fixated with screws (not common 25 years ago) and I would be concerned with migration of the implant. Photos and a CT would be helpful.
