Lipomas have capsules and kybella can help but it will not remove the lipoma completely. Lipedema cannot be treated with kybella as lipedema has large areas that are affected and needs aggressive multiple surgical treatment plans for removal/improvement. Best, Dr. Emer.
Kybella is FDA approved only to treat submental fat or fat under the chin. It can be used off label to improve lipoma or lipedema but it will not remove them. I would suggest you to look into different treatments to treat lipoma or lipedema such as surgery. Good luck!
Dear Lynn2569:I have used Kybella (deoxycholic acid) successfully to treat lipomas. It is an off-label use of this medication, as are many medical and surgical treatments. Some of the original studies of deoxycholic acid involved the treatment of lipomas. The treatment of lipomas may have a different outcome than the treatment of fat in subcutaneous tissues, since fat cells in layers of fat, which are not proliferating, are eliminated permanently, whereas fat cells in lipomas, which start small and enlarge over time until they become stable, may still be proliferating. We have not had enough time to learn if they eventually enlarge with this treatment. All the best, Dr. Clark
Thank you foryour question Lynn2569. Kybella isthe first and thus-far only FDA-approved non-surgical injectable treatment forthe double chin. It is currently only approved for treatment of the submental area. Other areas are treated off label, most commonly bra fat. I have not heard of Kybella being used for a lipoma or lipedema. Pleaseconsult with a doctor for specific recommendations. Good luck!
Since Kybella is only FDA approved for treating fat under the chin, using it to treat a lipoma would be considered off label. Furthermore, though it can reduce the size of the lipoma, it will not get rid of it. Surgery would probably be your best bet.
Dear LynnThanks for your question. I have treated 3 patients with Kybella who had lipomas and did not want surgery, or had conditions such as keloids which made surgery not the best option. We have seen decent results. They become less noticeable, but after 3 injection sessions have not completely resolved. We will likely try at least 2 more. Surgery is the best option for definitive treatment, but Kybella can be an alternative, as long as you have the understanding that you will not get complete resolution of the lipoma. I hope this is helpfulDr Shaw
Kybella is only FDA approved for the submental (double chin) area. However, just like many physicians inject Botox into many areas other than the 2 FDA approved cosmetic areas (glabella or "11s" and crow's feet), there are physicians who will use Kybella off-label for other areas such as lipomas. Depending on the size, it can be cost prohibitive to do much of that, but Kybella should destroy any fat cells in it as path and has about a 1 cm spread.
Thanks for the great question! Kybella is FDA approved for use in the submental (neck) area, however there are some doctors who use the product off label for treatment of lipomas and for other areas of the body. Because Kybella is not specific in which fat cells it destroys, it has many potential uses outside of the neck area. Best of luck!~Dr. Sieber
Off label, yes, it can however lipomas are covered with a membrane - this can be broken down with subcision, but its not good enough to remove it completely. I advice all my patients that surgical methods are more reliable. Dr Davin Lim. Brisbane. Australia.
I agree with the previous posts. It is most important to examined. I have treated patients with lipedema in the past. It is important to have the correct diagnosis after a review if you medical history and physical exam.
I appreciate your question. Cost varies by geographic location, surgeon expertise, OR time, anesthesia, length of procedure etc. I would recommend that you see a board certified plastic surgeon in your area who specializes in aesthetic and restorative plastic surgery and who is also a...
Dear Lora,Smart Lipo is a tool that we use in liposuction and I use it myself in a specific way. Rather than paying so much attention to the tools that are being used, more importantly is the evaluation of the patient with lipedema. My experience with lipedema is almost always a circumferential...
