Pricing of Dysport/Botox. How do they justify charging the same per unit for 2 totally different products?

Both Dysport and Botox come as powder, the Dr. can reconstitute the product that changes the strength per unit, It is not uncommon to mix your neurotoxins the same dilution to keep it constant within an office.

In our practice, we charge based on what we call Botox equivalent units. While Dysport is diluted differently (3 units of Dysport is roughly equal to 1 unit of Botox), the mixing and diluting instructions on the product are roughly the same. Therefore, we inject and charge based on the number of units in Botox equivalents. While we do charge slightly less for Dysport, that is based on our particular practice pricing from the manufacturer based on volume of injection, use of particular breast implants, and other factors. Not all practices will receive the same pricing from the manufacturer, and therefore may charge more for Dysport than other practices.

I appreciate your question and understand your frustration. Pricing for injectables is set by the practice itself, so you may want to research other qualified injectors. Botox and Dysport are both effective treatments for dynamic fine lines and wrinkles. However, from a functional and efficacy point of view and if reconstituted in the standard way, 20 units of Botox is generally equivalent to around 50 units of Dysport and hence, the pricing should generally reflect the same ratio as well. Most dermatologists determine price by how many units are injected.. Patients understand botox units better than dysport so when asked we generally answer in botox equivalent units when using dysport.
so if you are getting 30 dysport units we might say that is equivalent to 10 botox units and we charge for instance 12 dollars per botox unit.

You're right that Botox and Dysport cannot be directly compared and that 2.5 - 3 units of Dysport is roughly equivalent to 1 unit of Botox. For simplicity, many offices including mine refer to all neurotoxins in terms of "Botox equivalents". Dysport is cheaper per unit, however you need more Dysport units to get the same results. Say you wanted your frown lines treated. It could be 50 units of Dysport or 20 units of Botox. The cost per unit of Dysport is roughly 2.5 times less than the cost of a unit of Botox, so knowing this, pricing both Botox and Dysport the same, say $12/unit, for patients actually works out. Pricing for Botox and Dysport is set by each practice. You are correct that one unit of Botox is equivalent to approximately 3 units of Dysport. They are both neuromodulators and work similarly. I encourage you to discuss your concerns with your injector for further clarification.

Botox and dysport are both neurotoxins, but 20 units of botox is equal to 60 units of dysport. All clinics charge differently however standard is to charge 1/3 of what is charged for botox, for dysport. You should double check to see if they were confusing it with Xeomin perhaps.

2.5 units of Dysport equals 1 unit of Botox so that should help you figure out that Dysport should be around $4.50 a unit.
