Extremely red irritated eyes after lower blepharoplasty? (Photo)

Question

I received a lower blepharoplasty 3 days ago. The first few days that was very minimal swelling and bruising. Yesterday my eyes were almost completely swollen shut. My incisions are bright red and hurt very bad. I have been taking all medication as prescribed and doing cold compresses all throughout the day. I am due to be married May 1st and my doctor told me I had plenty of time to heal before then. I am worried I have an infection and or something is wrong. Help please !

Thank you for the question and your photo. It looks like things are going well from the pics. That said, irritation of the conjunctiva and lower eyelid skin can occur after surgery. If this is painful, or if there is any discharge or thicker/mucoid tears, you should contact your surgeon. It may be necessary to use some antibiotic eye drops in such cases. You look good for being 3 days post op after a lower bleh.  If your incisions are becoming increasing painful, please alert your surgeon.  I think you will be fine for the May 1st deadline!

Three days after surgery is very early and you should expect redness, swelling and bruising as long as it's not progressing.  According to your pictures, it appears you are healing appropriately.  Make sure you follow up with your surgeon for any concerns and so they can follow your progress.  After three days, I recommend warm compresses to my patients and I prescribe an antibiotic/steroid combined opthalmic solution for the first 7-10 days after surgery which minimizes the symptoms.  Also, know that your eyelids commonly may appear worse in the morning and improve throughout the day.  Congrats and good luck on  your marriage.
