The muscles of the chin change shape when smiling and this sometimes create the impression that the chin is moving up, pointing forward or pointing down. In many instances, if the chin muscles are creating an aesthetic problem when smiling, botulinum toxin represents a good solution. By reducing the activity of the chin muscles, the shape of the chin remains relatively similar when smiling to what it is when the face is relaxed. Because the chin appears to have good prominence, a chin implant is not likely to be of help. If the chin appears slightly over-projected when the face is relaxed, a small chin reduction can be favourable. This is best evaluated in computer simulation based on 3D photos. A cone beam CT scan can also identify whether there is a genuine over-projection of the chin.
