Botox side effects/reaction, flu like symptoms for a couple weeks. Any options? I like the results, just not the side effects.

These symptoms aren't typical with Botox. However, Xeomin or Dysport along with fillers, lasers and microneedling/prp are good alternatives. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. Best, Dr. Emer

I do a lot of Botox injections, both for medical and cosmetic reasons.   Of the thousands upon thousands of injections I have done, I HAVE had a few people over the years that do get a transient flu-like syndrome or malaise for the first day or two after Botox treatments.  Of the several who have wanted to try another option, they have done very well with Xeomin in particular.  Dysport is also something to try because it is formulated differently than Botox and may not give that same reaction.  So I DO think it is a real side effect that can occur in a very small percentage of people, and it may be worth the effort to try another type of neurotoxin in the hopes you won't have the same reaction!Good luck!Dr. Mohadjer

During the initial clinical trials and rarely since then flu like symptoms have been reported although most doctors do not realize that it is possible.  there is nothing i know of that can prevent this other than you may take some aspirin 48 hours after the Botox

Hi and thanks for the question.  When you are in New England and hear hoof beats in a barn, it is usually a horse and not a zebra.  In all likelihood, you have a cold or the flu which has no relationship to the Botox that you received other that they each happened near the same time.  Eat some chicken soup and I would try some Botox again, when you need it, and see if the symptoms recur.  Feel better
