Hi! 28 y/oF born with hereditary dark circles that I've always covered up every day before leaving the house. Now that I'm approaching 30 I'm noticing loss of volume under my eyes, causing pretty severe dark circles no matter what, making me feel unattractive and old. I'm getting married in 3 months, and I'd like to see improvement in this area before then so I feel pretty on my wedding day. I'm currently on Spironolactone for hormonal acne. Is this a problem? Your replies mean so much to me!

Facial filler (ex. Restylane) can help improve the appearance of the eyes in appropriate patients. Any bruising or swelling after this office treatment is usually mild and resolves within a couple days. Results with fillers under the eye area typically last several months to year. Your body gradually dissolves the material.An alternative to facial fillers is lower eyelid surgery to remove excess fat, which may contribute to the dark circles. If you haven't already, then speak with a plastic surgeon to review options. Acne medication generally can still be used during filler treatment. However, your plastic surgeon may decided to wait on treatment if there is any active or inflamed acne.Best,Dr. Chaboki

Fillers are an excellent option to help restore lost volume in the area underneath the eyes (tear troughs). Though this will help lessen the appearance of dark circles, it will not completely take away any pigment changes that you may have. To get the best results you will need a combination of fillers, chemical peels, and at home skin lightening products. The fillers are safe to use with spironolactone. You can have filler under the eye safely while on spironolactone. You want to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen products for about a week prior to your injections to minimize bruising. Best wishes on your wedding!

Fillers are a great way to correct tear troughs that frequently cause some dark circles. See an expert injector who can determine if you are a good candidate and expertly correct the problem if you are. Spironolactone, a diuretic, should cause no problem with fillers. However, you should avoid aspirin or any anti-inflammatory drugs as they will increase the risk of bleeding and bruising. Taking Arnica Montana and bromelain or pineapple juice can also reduce those risks.
