I suggest having multiple in person consultations with local board-certified plastic surgeons to get an accurate assessment and better understanding of treatment options. If your primary concern is your abdomen then most of your problems are most likely pregnancy related and the best treatment and most likely most recommended treatment will be a full tummy tuck. There are four variables to determine what the abdomen looks like. They are skin laxity, excess subcutaneous fat, muscle separation from previous pregnancies and excess visceral or intra-abdominal fat Liposuction if done well can bring in the front of your abdomen by about 1 inch but it will not get you a tight flat abdomen. most likely the major issue with the front of your abdomen is more related to muscle separation and skin laxity. There’s also a substantial difference in skill and experience when it comes to delivering quality Liposuction results. The number of plastic surgeons who can consistently deliver quality liposuction results is less than most people believe in simply being board-certified in plastic surgery with an overall good reputation is insufficient to confirm someone has mastered this procedure. There’s nothing wrong with having Liposuction but in the end it depends on what you’re trying to achieve and what you’re willing to go through. In regards to the front of your abdomen a tummy tuck is most likely the better procedure. For your love handles, waist and back liposuction is ideal. If you opt for liposuction but I highly recommend being very selective and putting in a serious effort to find the right provider. To find the right provider I recommend having multiple in person consultations. Choose providers who have impressive quantity and quality before and after pictures on their websites. Avoid virtual consultations whenever possible. During each in person consultation ask each provider to open up your portfolio and show you their entire collection of before and after pictures of previous patients who had similar body characteristics to your own. Being shown a handful of preselected images which most likely represent the best results of a providers career is insufficient to get a clear understanding of what I average results look like or how many of these procedures any one surgeon has performed. For reference an experienced provider should have no difficulty showing you at least 50 sense I’ll before and after pictures for commonly performed procedures like abdominal liposuction or a tummy tuck. Bring pictures of your own torso with you to use for reference. Seeing pictures of other patients with different body characteristics is not sufficient to get a clear understanding of what your results will look like in the hands of each provider. Do you need to see patients with the same degree of skin laxity, similar amount of subcutaneous fat, the same amount of muscle separation etc. etc. I sometimes refer to ideal Liposuction candidates as being “young tight and pudgy”. I personally view the torso as a single anatomic unit and generally try to treat the entire torso when doing Liposuction. Buy treating the entire torso patience get a natural even thin fat distribution that stays consistent. spot treating the torso or not treating all the areas will leave transition zones between treated and untreated areas that doesn’t look natural. A full torso includes upper abdomen, lower abdomen, love handles, waist, full back and under arm areas all the way to the side of the breast. Ask providers to show you examples of excellent outcomes, average outcomes and results that did not turn out as well as they had hoped for. Ask them to only show you pictures of patients who have similar body characteristics to your own. Ask what their revision rate is and what their revision policy is for whatever procedure you end up having. If you’re judging tummy tuck results then look carefully to see who gets the most natural looking belly buttons with a very lowest that scar that follows anatomic contours naturally and evenly on both sides. If you’re judging tummy tuck results then look carefully to see who gets the most natural looking belly buttons with a very lowest that scar that follows anatomic contours naturally and evenly on both sides. For a tummy tuck the entire torso should look attractive and balanced and proportionate from all angles including from behind. You’ll probably find the plastic surgeons who do not have sufficient skill and experience to do quality Liposuction will steer you strongly towards a tummy tuck. Those who have sufficient skills and experience to do Liposuction well will give you the option and explain the difference in outcomes especially by showing you sufficient numbers Of before and after pictures for you to get a clear understanding of their skill. Continue having consultations until you feel comfortable that you have a good assessment, a good understanding of treatment options and you found a surgeon who can deliver the results you’re hoping for. When in doubt slow down and schedule more consultations. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
