What are the chances of needing a blood transfusion during a BBL or BA?

If you are with a high quality board certified surgeon with experience performing those procedures in an accredited facility the chance should be approaching 0. We never say never in medicine, but most of us attempt our BA procedures with nearly zero blood loss and a BBL should never cause enough blood loss to require a transfusion. If you are really concerned you can always bank your own blood which may be ok depending on the exact nature of your beliefs surrounding blood products. Hope that helps!

hello thank you for your question and provided information as well..This event is very rare that happens.It can happen if your hemoglobin drops to the level of 8.so that this event does not happen to you, it is recommended that the patient have a high blood level value, that is, above 12.It is advisable if you discuss everything concerning the case with your plastic surgeon.

BBL and BA don't cause major blood loss so the chance of needing blood transfusion is really low but still existing. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.

Hola, Para planificar una cirugía como la que deseas realizar, lo adecuado es hacer primero exámenes de sangre , plaquetas, tiempos de cuagulación  y de hígado, para verificar estado antes de entrar a sala de operaciones, se debe operar en un centro quirúrgico que tenga todo o necesario, en liposucción por lo regular NO deben perder mucha sangre si se realiza con soluciones que previenen dicho problema , hacer la liposucción dirigida , de esa forma se previenen las complicaciones o riesgos innecesario, en lo personal la realizo con anestesia epidural . Despues de la cirugia en ocaciones la persona queda mareada por un par de días , lo cual es normal.

The best way to eliminate the need for a blood transfusion is to avoid blood loss.  Some blood loss during surgery is inevitable but a lot of steps can be taken to minimize blood loss. This is certainly true for liposuction and breast augmentation's.  Both of these procedures can be done at the same time but recovery can be challenging especially if the doctor recommends not sleeping on your back after a BBL.  Personally, I've never given a blood transfusion after either one of these procedures.  Some plastic surgeons will perform enough procedures that blood transfusions are done. This seems to be more prevalent in certain countries.  In the United States I think most plastic surgeons would say you should not perform so much surgery as to need a blood transfusions on a regular basis.  The most important determinant in minimizing blood loss is the use of epinephrine which is part of numbing medicine and numbing solution used during both liposuction and fat transfer procedures. Lidocaine with epinephrine can also be injected in key areas before a breast augmentation minimizing blood loss in this procedure as well.  For epinephrine to take full effect it takes 10 to 20 minutes. When liposuction is done using general anesthesia the numbing properties of local anesthetics are less important. Still, the vasoconstrictive property of epinephrine is equally as important. Talk to your plastic surgeon specifically about using correct amounts of epinephrine and awaiting the appropriate amount of time before starting surgery.  Some plastic surgeons adhere to these principles more than others.  Time in the operating room is expensive and extended anesthetics are not a good idea. Still, I believe waiting for epinephrine to have full affect is time well spent and serves the patients in their best interest. It is unlikely you would bleed to the point of needing a blood transfusion as long as your hemoglobin levels are adequate before surgery.   Talk to your plastic surgeons before scheduling any procedures and let them know your exact wishes are in regards to blood transfusions in the very unusual case that you would need one.  All board-certified plastic surgeons are familiar with the proper use of epinephrine and have most likely taken care of Jehovah's Witness patients in the past.  Best, Mats Hagstrom M.D. 

Major blood loss in any elective procedure is uncommon.This should be a very rare event in an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon. Appropriate tumescent technique in BBL is necessary to have fat for grafting. Talk to an experienced PS.
