What cartilage/other grafts can be used in a revision?

Good Afternoon! Rib cartilage is certainly stiff and that's one reason rhinoplasty surgeons like to use it. By being stiff, it keeps the nose in position long-term. Softer cartilage may feel better, but it is often weaker and can lead to untoward changes. Ear cartilage is soft but not useful for many grafts needed in support. Septal cartilage is ideal because it is somewhere between the two. Fascia can also be placed over top to help camouflage and smooth any areas which may be too firm or pointy. I always tell my patients that their nose will feel stiffer after a structure rhinoplasty, but that's not a bad thing. Hope this helps!

Thank you for your question. This really comes down to the pros and cons of surgery. The big question is, does the appearance and the stiffness bother you enough that you'd want to risk undergoing revision surgery? Usually when rib is used, it's because the nose needs support to achieve a particular result. Thus, if the rib were to be removed, it would be less stiff, but would likely loose support. Septal cartilage is less stiff than rib, but it is thinner and weaker. Again, it really comes down to the appearance and stiffness being severe enough to undergo a complex revision.
