How long does the dental block used to numb during Juvederm lip injection last?

I had Juvderm in my lips today at 5 pm. It's 11:30 pm and the dental block that was used to numb the surrounding area has not subsided at all. My cheeks, naso folds, and above my lips are still as numb as they were 6.5 hours ago!

Nerve blocks should last 2-3 hours, if longer, speak to your physician.  Rarely is there anything to worry about. Best, Dr. Emer.

Thank you for sharing your question.  In most cases lidocaine is used which can last between 45 minutes and 2 hours after injection, perhaps up to 3-4 if the lidocaine was combined with adrenaline.  If your physician used Marcaine instead of lidocaine you may have numbness for 6-8 hours after treatment.  Talk to your injector, they are your best source of information and reassurance.

it appears that the upper lip nerve block anesthesia was used which should not be lasting more than 6-8 hour regardless of the local anesthetic type used. Please see your injecting doctor if that numbness has not resolved

Thanks for your question and usually these numbing injections last 2-3 hours. If a longer acting anesthetic was used, it can last longer.  Speak to your provider and find out what was used and how long the numbing should last.  You will be fine.

Lidocaine usually lasts 2-3 hours.  A longer lasting numbing medication like Marcaine can last 6-8 hours.

Thank you for your important question.  I am sorry to hear you are still experiencing numbness after the nerve block.  It is not common for the anesthesia to persist as long as you describe.  If the sensation has not returned to normal this morning, please return to your dermatologist or plastic surgeon.  There are at least two possibilities: the infraorbital nerve was slightly injured with the dental block or the swelling from the Juvederm is putting pressure on the nerve.  This complication can be treated and is usually temporary (can last 6 weeks to 9 months). Best of luck,Suneel Chilukuri, M.D.Houston, Texas
