Is 6 weeks post op too late for massage to be effective?

There are many situations where a surgeon would not want massage performed early on. It is not uncommon to start massage six weeks following breast augmentation. Scar tissue usually doesn't start forming until week four or five and massage is often indicated to act on the scar to soften it. Discuss your concerns with your surgeon. Many times a surgeon will refrain from massage in the first week to avoid displacing the implant.

Hello, there is no accepted protocol for breast massage and differing opinions about its effectiveness.  It is best to adhere to the postop care recommendations of your surgeon because they are able to assess your healing progress.

While there are some instances where massage can help stretch tissues to help implants settle, there is no evidence that it prevents capsular contracture. Some surgeons recommend it but if yours did not then there is no need to do it. In fact it may contribute to implants bottoming out. Bottom line is ask your plastic surgeon and follow his or her advice.

Inspira implants are not yet available in the US.  If they are textured implants then no massage is recommended.  Seek the advise of your plastic surgeon.  

The jury isn't out on whether massage is effective to reduce capsular contracture. We don't reccomend breast massage, though some feel it to be an important part of their routine after breast augmentation. Six weeks is prbaly not too late if you have a smooth implant and your breast feels better afterward.

The importance of implant massage is not clearly defined. Most surgeons have their patients massage smooth implants, but not all surgeons recommend this. I personally feel that massage keeps the space around the implant a bit bigger than the implant which will allow the breast to move more naturally but I doubt massage will prevent a capsular contracture from happening.
