Swelling and pain one week after Kybella?

Question

I got Kybella (10 injections) under my chin last week and its still noticeably swollen and I really don't like this look! How long until this bullfrog look will go away? Will it ever go away?

The swelling is not permanent. In my experience, the patients who are more swollen tend to get better results because more fat cells are lysing and the medication is working better. It is normal to have a little tenderness, but if you're in pain you should contact your injector. Swelling goes away by 2 to 3 weeks and you should not be massaging which could actually worsen the swelling.Please “Follow” me on Realself.  The "follow" button is similar to the "Like" button on Facebook. and thank you for sharing your concern here. Swelling after Kybella
injection id quite common and it can last up to 7-10 days. Hence, what you are
experiencing does not appear to be out of ordinary. However, if the swelling
lasts for more than 10-12 days or if you experience other signs or symptoms, then

Pain and swelling are extremely common after a series of kybella injections. It typically lasts for 1-2 weeks and starts to return to normal by the third week. You should start seeing your results over the next 1-2 months.

Yes, the swelling will resolve in a few weeks. In the mean time, it can be improved with venus legacy and lymphatic massage. For best results with Kybella, I recommend a combination approach with thermage/ultherapy/exilis. VASER liposuction in combination with ThermiRF or ultrasound are best for contouring the chin, if you're a candidate. Having personally had Kybella and administering many treatments on patients, rest assured that the swelling will subside. Your should start approaching your baseline state in the next week and then see gradual refinement in your submental fullness up to two months later. Hang in there!

Thanks for your question! Swelling underneath the neck is normal after Kybella treatment, and occurs because the medication causes fat cells to die / rupture (lyse). The contents of the lysed cells need time to be absorbed by the body, and this process causes the symptoms of redness, swelling, etc. The swelling can dissipate within the first 1-2 weeks, but in 20% of patients, the swelling lasted more than 30 days. Rest assured, even if it lasts for over 1 month, the swelling is not permanent. The patients studied were followed up 3 months after their last injection, and the improvement was noted at that time. You may see improvement before 3 months, but this is just a reminder that you may have to be patient.
Also, you may need repeated injections to obtain the results you desire. Repeat injections should be performed at least 1 month apart. Some say the swelling is not as bad in the later injections as it is in your first one.

Yes, the swelling will resolve. It typically takes about 2 weeks for the majority of the swelling to resolve but it can take longer. It really depends on how your body heals and how much fat was present. The swelling is actually a sign that the Kybella is working.
