I do not recommend lymphatic massage for my patients, because I feel as though if the result is smooth on the table the result can only be sabotaged. If your PS recommends lymphatic drainage massages after lipo and breast explant, his patient coordinator will likely have a list of massage therapist from which you can choose.Kennneth Hughes, MD, ABPS Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA
Thank you for sharing your excellent question. Lymphatic massages may help speed the resolution of tissue swelling but are not required for healing. Hope this helps.
Dear PPattily, lymphatic massages can reduce swelling but every plastic surgeon has his own postoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
Thank you for your question. Your surgeon can give you specific advice regarding massage after liposuction. In my office, I do recommend that patients massage daily. However, I find that it's more helpful for them to perform the massage themselves because they can do it more frequently. I typically recommend that they massage for 5-10 minutes per day using the flat of their hand. If there are smaller areas that are more firm than others then I recommend that they use their fingertips to directly massage these areas. Congratulations on your procedure!
Thanks for writing,This massage can help with swelling, but I am not convinced the massage adds any significant benefit in long term outcomes. Gold luck Stephen M. This question is best answered by your surgeon. He/She is most familiar with your surgical plan and how you've been progressing through recovery. Lymphatic drainage is helpful in promoting swelling resolution, but is not required for a successful recovery.
