How do I get dried blood out of my hair? I had an endoscopic brow lift 2 days ago. (Photo)

Question

Apparently the blood was allowed to just drain down into my very thick, long hair. I’m taking the mummy wrap off tomorrow and will be allowed to wash my hair - but not blow dry. Any solutions? I’m sure it will take a few washes.

Hi there, thanks for your question and photos! I agree with the other reviewers and recommend starting off with a 50/50 solution of warm water and hydrogen peroxide to help break up some of the thicker clots of blood  and conditioner to remove/comb out the hair.  Hope this helps!

You could rinse your hair with half strength hydrogen peroxide.  That normally works pretty well to get rid of dried blood in the hair after surgery.

conditioner is actually very helpful to get the blood out- works better than the shampoo.  So do that first and then shampoo.

As mentioned below, hydrogen peroxide diluted to 50% strength in water will help loosen and remove the dry blood. After this, baby shampoo will also help. Avoid submerging or scrubbing directly on the incision sites.

Excellent question niptuckme.  Dried blood can be hard to remove which is why I shampoo my patient's hair in the OR.  The 50/50 water and hydrogen peroxide is a great start, but it can also bleach your hair if you don't get it all out.  Most of the time warm water, shampoo, and conditioner will do the job.  Discuss options with your surgeon to make sure it won't interfere with their prescribed wound care.  Good luck and hope you are loving your new brow position!!

Hello! I agree with peroxide mixed w water 50/50 but I have my patients take a shower and shampoo gently after 1 week and this usually takes care of it. No scrubbing or soaking the incisions in a tub is recommended though. Air dry or blow dry is the best for this as well.

I generally recommend using half strength hydrogen peroxide to break up dried blood.  Conditioner is also effective.  If the brow is held in its new location with Endotines, be extremely careful not to pull on your hair or elevate the skin away from the skull.  This could disengage the Endotines requiring immediate attention.

so work that into your hair and use a comb to help pull off the scabs.  If you know peroxide won't change the color of your hair, that could be done if the conditioner fails, but it shouldn't.  Enjoy your shower!

Hello niptuckme, 
Congratulations on your endoscopic brow lift.  Dried blood in the hair may be a pain to remove.  Use shampoo with a generous amount of conditioner, and gently comb away the blood.  Hydrogen peroxide can be used if some of the blood gets too stubborn and won't come out.  I recommend, however, that you be gentle around the incisions and the staples.
