I specialize in African American and other ethnic hair transplant procedures. As the other respondents have noted, African American hair is more difficult to transect due to its sharp curvature, growth pattern and texture. There is no substantive difference between FUE and Strip procedures with regard to amount or quality of grafts harvested, it comes down to the surgeon’s ability and experience.
Follicular Unit Excision involves taking each hair follicle out using a small cylindrical instrument. It does not always work well for curly hairs since the cylindrical instrument is straight (not curved). However, many men with curly hair still have FUE harvesting because they want to keep their hair short in the back without showing a linear scar.
For patients with curly hair, FUE can be challenging. Most surgeons find it impossible, but I have gained quite a bit of experience with this over the past decade and found it to be possible in most patients. Yield is often less than with straight hair. In patients with short hair, FUE is the better option even if it takes more than one session to obtain your desired results.
Given the latest FUE technology, regrowth rates are every bit- if not even higher- than with FUT. I would not do any strip on you- I think you need to make sure you have a surgeon with a lot of experience working FUE on patients with curly hair like yours.
Hello,Yes, It is possible to get good dense with curly hairs in both techniques FUE and FUT. For detailed consultation you can send us photo of your donor area to determine how many grafts it is possible to transplant.
