Answer: Blood clots and surgical risk Extensive liposuction and BBL are a high risk combination for complications including blood clots. BBL is one of the most dangerous operations in plastic surgery. A detailed history about how and why you had a DVT is important in helping you determine the level of safety.

Answer: Blood clots and Plastic surgery Thank you so much for your question. There is a chance that you will have a blood clot again and some doctors prefer to avoid this complication and even more with a history. My recommendation is that before carrying out any surgery plan, you take tests that support what your doctor has previously said and never hide this complication. The best of luck Dr. Quiroz

Answer: Blood clot and surgery Dear chellebeauty, it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. You will need to get clearance from your doctor prior to surgery. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations. Answer: History of DVT Plastic surgeons have the right to select who do you want to operate on. this is especially true for elective cosmetic surgical procedures. A history of having previous blood clots put you at risk for having blood clots in the future. each provider will have their own level of comfort of doing surgery and individuals who have certain medical history just like they will and individuals who may or may not candidates. I recommend all patients have multiple in person consultations at which time you can get an accurate assessment and better understanding of treatment options. That would also be the time to discuss your medical history and you’ll get to know firsthand how the surgeon feel so bad taking on your case with your medical history. It doesn’t sound like you had a proper consultation before you scheduled surgery so that sounds like a big red flag to me. I recommend anybody interested in having Liposuction with or without fat transfer have at least five in person consultations with local board-certified plastic surgeons who have extensive experience with the procedure. Avoid virtual consultations whenever possible. I also highly recommend people avoid traveling long distances for elective surgical procedures. During each consultation ask each provider to open up their portfolio and show you their entire collection of before and after pictures especially of patients who had similar body characteristics to your own. An experience provider should have no difficulty showing you at least 50 set a before and after pictures of commonly performed procedures like the BBL. If you’ve had significant medical history then requesting medical clearance is appropriate and some providers may still simply not want to do your procedure. In the end you should recognize that you are the one who is at increased risk for medical complications if you have a medical history with complications like blood clots. It’s not the doctor he’s going to potentially get a blood clot from the procedure it’s the patient. You may very well be a good candidate for the procedure and there may be plenty of plastic surgeons willing to do your procedure. Schedule a few in person consultations to get a good assessment at the same time that your plastic surgeon and find out how they feel about your medical history. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
