Is this swelling normal a few hours after Juvederm Ultra Plus XC? (photo)

Question

I had 1 syringe of juvaderm fillers on my lips last night around 9pm & after a few hours the swelling was so intense. I woke up this morning even worse. I don’t feel pain but my lips look so swollen and I’m super scared that it’s not normal. Please help!!! This photo was taken this morning 12hrs after the fillers. This is also my very first time. Please help!

Thank you for sharing your question and photograph.  Swelling after filler placement into the lips is quite common due to the thin nature of the tissues, but yours is excessive unless the majority of the syringe was placed into your upper lip.  This swelling, and your results, will steadily improve over the next 10-14 days.  It often takes up to 2 weeks for fillers to soften and the tissues to appear more natural.  In the meantime try reducing the swelling by using cold compresses to your lips and elevating your head at night with a couple of extra pillows behind your back.  You may want to also consider using Arnica Montana and bromelain as supplements.  Hang in there!

Swelling is common after fillers but if it is excessive it may indicate a hematoma or excessive material injected. Yous should follow up with your surgeon for evaluation.

Some swelling after placement is normal and it can take several days to experience your true results. However, the degree of swelling you’re experiencing is severe and should be examined by your injector. You could be having an advert reaction to the formula.

Most likely most of the filler went in to your upper lip and that would explain the reason why there is so much more swelling in the upper lip. You can always follow up with your treating physician for reassurance and you can also wait for the next few days to see how the swelling comes down. Good luck for me York City

This appears to be a very excessive amount of swelling.  I recommend to return to your injector immediately and if he/she is not available to see another board certified injector.  It is difficult to say exactly what the underlying cause of the swelling is not knowing your past medical history and relying on a photo alone, but you should always follow up with your injector if you have any questions or if you believe something may not be normal. Patients experience varying degrees of swelling after lip injection, however your swelling is certainly significant and in my opinion beyond what is typically experienced. I would recommend contacting your injector to be seen and evaluated. They can evaluate for blood collecting beneath the surface (hematoma) or other adverse reaction. It is always better to have things checked out rather than wait on them. I hope this helped, good luck!!

Most likely this is a perfectly normal reaction to the Juvederm dermal filler. Individuals can experience a wide range of swelling from a very minimal amount to something more excessive (like yourself).  Swelling is sometimes immediate after injections or can start a few hours after treatment. Often times, a patient will have more swelling upon waking up the morning after a treatment. I would call the office and let your injector know so they can follow up with you. I usually have my patient take an anti-inflammatory such as Motrin and an antihistamine such as Claritin or Zyrtec to help reduce swelling and I might even call in an oral steroid such as Prednisone so that the swelling would go down sooner and the patient will be more comfortable. Your injector may also want to take a look at you just to be certain that there is no sign of infection.
