I had Dysport while breast feeding. When is it safe to feed again?

There are no studies on the impact of Dysport and breastfeeding. I recommend following up with your OB/GYN about the recommended timeline for resuming. It can take up to 2 weeks for final results with Dysport. Hope this helps.

It is recommended to postpone Dysport and other neuromodulator treatments until after pregnancy and/or breastfeeding. There is not currently enough evidence to confirm or deny its safety during breastfeeding. It's recommended to contact your lactation specialist for further guidance.

It is okay to get injections while breast feeding as long as you "pump and dump" for the following 1 - 2 days. This will be enough time to filter everything out and you will be able to breastfeed again.

Whilst It is not recommend to use Dysport when pregnant or breastfeeding it is yet to be determined if it is infact harmful or not for the baby.  It is best to discuss this with your Cosmetic Physician prior to treatment regarding their protocol. 
If a patient insists on having Dysport whilst breastfeeding it is possible to pump and store enough breastmilk before the treatment and bottle feed the baby with the stored milk for 5 days after the treatment.
Since the treatment has already taken place, as a precaution, do not breast feed the baby for the next 5 days, but rather pump and dispose of the milk.

Unfortunately there are no studies that determine the safety of breastfeeding or pregnancy while undergoing treatment with Botox or Dysport. This is a question that should be asked to all patients prior to undergoing treatment. It is best to discuss this with your provider and OBGYN on this timeframe. I hope this helps!

Basically we tell patients not to get dysport or botox while breast feeding because we just don't know enough about it.  It is unethical to do studies on pregnant/breast feeding moms so there is no data available.  Most doctors err on the conservative side and say don't get it while pregnant or breastfeeding.  
Having said that there was a reported case of a mom with full-out botulism poisoning (see attached link) that breast feed her infant without passing the illness to her baby.  It is highly unlikely that a cosmetic dose of dysport, which is injected into the muscle--not directly to the blood stream, could reach a high enough dose in the blood stream to be passed to the breast milk and onto the baby.  
If it helps you feel better, I, against my better judgement, botoxed myself throughout my last pregnancy, He is the smartest one of the bunch!  It definitely did not affect brain development.  He was my third, and I was tired, so he went straight to bottle feeding. I cannot directly attest to neurotoxin while breastfeeding but I seriously doubt it would be a problem.  Just wait for your next dose till the baby is weaned.  Until then, keep breastfeeding--it is really good for baby!
