I've had the Mirena IUD inserted for the past few years now and as a result, I do not menstruate; I'm wanting to know if It needs to be removed before my surgery... Mirena is an FDA-approved intrauterine device (IUD) that is recommended for women who’ve had a child. It’s made of soft, flexible plastic. Getting Mirena is nonsurgical, and placement is done by your healthcare provider during a routine office visit.

RoyalBooty, this is a very good question. Since liposuction, BBL, and tummy tuck focus on areas of fat and not the uterus/reproductive organs, you will not need to have the Mirena IUD removed. While some patients have rightly voiced concerns that some forms of birth control may affect clotting, patients do not have to worry about this with Mirena. The concentration of hormones in Mirena is such that it should not affect blood clotting post-surgery. However, please note that if you have a history of blood clotting or have had issues with blood clotting while using Mirena, it is probably best if you have Mirena removed before your surgery, so as to minimize the risk of issues with blood clotting and other complications post-surgery.
