Eyelid surgery: Is it okay to take Zyrtec D along with Bromelain?

Question

I'm going to be having eyelid surgery (top and bottom) and have been okayed to continue with my Zyrtec D. I would like to take bromelain and arnica Montana also and wonder if it's okay to take those in combination with the Zyrtec D? Also, how close to surgery would you recommend I begin taking them, and how long after? Thank you.

I am a big fan of both Arnica and Bromelain just prior to and following cosmetic surgical procedures.  I would exercise caution with the use of decongestants which is what is found in Zyrtec D following any surgical procedure.  One of the biggest potential complications of any surgical procedure is bleeding.  Decongestants will elevate your blood pressure, perhaps only slightly.  Elevated blood pressure can precipitate bleeding.

It is fine to take these and the Zyrtec. Most patients start these supplements about a week pre-op.  Studies have not really shown them to be effective, but patients often feel that they heal faster and with less bruising when they take them.

I would have your surgeon review your medication list prior to surgery. Allergy medication and medication to prevent bruising really depends on each individual surgeon's preference.

I highly recommend that you work with your surgeon as she/he will have a more full understanding of your medical history to answer this. There are no strong studies around the supplements, however, this does not mean they may not aid in your healing!

Thank you for your question.  While there are no formal studies that demonstrate the benefits of taking them, there  are no contraindications either and some believe that the meds can help decrease bruising and accelerate healing.  You can generally begin taking them within a week of your surgery date and continue for about two weeks after.  However, this is only a guideline and best to follow your own doctors recommendations.  Best wishes.

Each surgeon will have preferences about medications that can be taken preop and postoperatively, so I would recommend that you discuss both Bromelain and Zyrtec D with a pharmacist and if he feels it is safe to take them, then discuss it with your surgeon.
