Best option to remove 6 month old chalazion? Can I get it drained before traveling abroad? (photo)

Question

Been to four doctors in the past 6 months. None will remove simple tiny chalzion keep refering me out to other docs. last doc said Kenelog shot I was told is too risky for my age , I am 21. Warm compress = unrespondant, chalzion is hard cyst now. 5 months in treatment of: neomycin 3 times a day and taking 2 100mg tabs of ic doxycycline. Willing incision cause more damage? I am going to thailand and india on the 20th of January. What is my best option. What are the odds of it never going away?

Thank you for your question. In my experience, a chalazion like I see in your photos, is best treated with an injection of Kenalog mixed with 5Fu. This is fine to have done before traveling abroad.

I had the same problem with 3 chalzions and opted for surgical excision. They completely resolved and have not returned. I think this is the best option

If conservative measures have failed you, you are wise to consider operative options.  Keep in mind that the area of Surgery needs to be clean and well maintained at least 1 week post op.  Please consult a board certified plastic surgeon or oculoplastic surgeon near you.  Thank you

A chronic chalazion such as that should be able to be treated by incision and drainage or at least a small steroid or 5fu injection (if not pregnant). An oculoplastic surgeon should be able to evaluate you and treat you before you travel.
