My wound under breast is taking a long time to heal. Am I doing something wrong? Feels like it will be there forever. (photo)

Hello Ashley. Thanks for your post and photos. You have wound dehiscence, a condition that is very common with anchor pattern breast lift. There's nothing wrong with you. However, you need to change how you're taking care of the wound. Talk to your PS and consider switching to wet to dry dressing changes. That has worked for me in similar conditions. Thank you for your question. It does appear as though you are experiencing delayed wound healing. I find it helps to keep the area clean and dry. That area tends to be vulnerable to added pressure from the implant and can be found moist from being at the breast fold. Speak with your surgeon to discuss best wound care options.Best,   

This is the most common place for wound problems in breast lift surgery.  It appears from your photo that your wound is trying to heal.  You have good red healing tissue called granulation tissue which is a sign that the wound is heading in the right direction.  You are doing the right things.  Stay in close contact with your surgeon.  After it has all healed you may benefit from a small scar revision.  Best of Luck.

Open wounds in those areas are predictable.  Due to swelling the wounds actually get bigger by weeks 2-3.  After this time they begin to contract.  It may take several weeks to notice a significant reduction in size.  Check with your doctor regularly because occasionally they do get infected.

You appear to have some swelling and inflammation in this photo. Many people have some allergy to Polysporin. As an expert in wound healing, I have found a hydrogel, such as Solosite, applied twice daily to be effective. Please speak to your surgeon about your concerns. The majority of these wounds heal nicely.

In a breast lift, the most vulnerable skin is at the inverted "T" scar beneath the breast.  It is not unusual to have a wound in this spot that can take several weeks to heal.  In most cases this area will heal with good local wound care (keeping the area clean and applying a topical antibiotic - Neosporin, Silvadene, etc).  If you are a smoker - stop - smoking will definitely slow the healing process.  Be certain to eat a well balanced diet and consider taking a daily multivitamin.  If the wound doesn't heal in the next 3 to 4 weeks, a skin graft could be considered, but give things time to heal.  I don't believe there is anything wrong with your ability to heal.   Best wishes, Dr. Lepore.
