The bigger implant size you go, is it true the more pain will follow?

While there might be some temporary increase in postoperative pain due to large implants, the real pain is long term:  increased complication rates, increased redo surgeries, increased drooping, thinning of the skin and stretch marks that can accompany very large implants.

Submuscular placement of either saline or silicone implants can normally lead to tightness and discomfort for the first few days. Ice compression with muscular relaxation medication and norco usually do the trick. Larger implants can cause more stretch with tightness and pain

There is a lot of factors which can affect the pain level (type of surgery, surgery technique, pain medicines, etc.). Going larger may increase the chance of having more discomfort and longer healing but this is not always true.  What you have to worry about with larger implant size is the risk of having more surgery in the future.  Andre Aboolian, MD, Plastic Surgereon, Beverly Hills

Implant size may affect the amount of discomfort you will experience after surgery. Larger implants may make your chest feel a greater amount of pressure and stretch from the implant fitting under breast envelope. Discomfort will vary between patients. Patients often describe post-operative as "soreness." One patient described it as "like I did 1,000 pushups." Other patients describe no pain at all. Pain can be controlled with good technique, nerve blocks, and/or post-operative medications. that is impacted most by your surgeon's technique and your own personality.  Larger implants may have more tendency to produce more pains due to the increased stretching that inherently comes with larger sizes.  When having a re-do, there is minimal pain.  And if going large, make sure it will make your life perfect because it will not last forever as problems due to the size will start creeping in and impact your results and outcome, often necessitating more surgery (lift and downsize).

Thank you for your question.  If you are a B cup and wanting to go to a full C this is a very reasonable request and the pain amount should be mild.  It would be different if you were trying to go to DDD or beyond where the pocket would have to be made much bigger to accommodate that size.  Do not let pain be your worry.  Most importantly select your surgeon based on experience and seeing a lot of photos.  

Not all women have a lot of pain with augmentations. More discomfort is expected with implants placed behind the muscle. Also, you have two different breasts, which may not experience the same amount of pain. You will be given medication post operatively to help you deal with any pain.

Hello and thank you for your question. Postoperative pain can depend on a few factors. It is true that a very large implant will cause more postoperative discomfort than a smaller implant, however, there will not be a significant difference if the implants are relative close in size. The decision on whether to place the implant over or under the pecotralis muscle can have an impact on postoperative pain, with more discomfort in the submuscular position due to the stretch on the muscle. Finally, good postoperative pain management is vital to a smooth recovery. I include a muscle relaxer as part of my postoperative regimen for all patients with implants under the muscle. Remember that the initial pain will quickly improve and it is important to have an augmentation you are happy with over the long run. Best of luck with your journey!
