Whenever I look down, the fat on my neck/chin is very noticeable. What are my options? (Photos)

50 year old male. My “double chin or neck?” Is more noticeable now whenever I look down I’m physically active (can loose about 10 pounds) but otherwise overall healthy. What are your recommendations doctors? I don’t want a fake “LA type of look” and not I’m a profession that pays a lot. Thanks.

Which procedure is best for a patient will depend on that patient’s individual concerns. If they have a lot of excess fat under the chin but good skin quality, liposuction is probably all that’s needed to achieve a more sculpted neckline. If there is significant sagging of the skin and underlying SMAS layer, liposuction won’t help, but a neck or facelift would. If a patient has both sagging skin and excess fat, a face or neck lift plus liposuction can be performed for optimal results. This is why a consultation with a board-certified facial plastic surgeon is so important; the patient needs to be evaluated, their goals discussed, and a custom treatment plan decided upon. You have many treatment options for a double chin. Kybella injections, jaw liposuction, skin tightening with Facetite, Thermi, Ultherapy,and laser treatment. If you truly have excess skin, then an isolated neck lift can be done.

Correction of a double chin can be achieved either though a surgical or non-invasive approaches. Liposuction and Jplazty (cold plasma energy to tighten skin) or FaceTyte Radio frequency of the chin and neck produces consistently great results for appropriate candidates. Some patients may even benefit from a small chin implant. We are very excited with the development of several non-invasive techniques for correction of a double chin. Ultherapy of the lower face and  submental neck can provide both skin tightening and fat reduction for more definition.  We also offer the Cool mini as a non-surgical alternative to liposuction for the right candidate. Liposuction is needed to remove the excess fat. Once that is completed the issue of loose skin remains. You have some options at that point: 1) allow the skin to contract (shrink) on its own with some compression, or2) enhance that skin contraction by using minimally invasive laser energy (Precision TX) or plasma energy (J-Plasma Subdermal), with tiny incisions, or3) performing a formal neck lift which involves incisions around the ears. All these are viable options to restoring a more youthful neck. It's best to begin by consulting with a surgeon in-person to discuss your options. Depending on the level of laxity, the effects of a neck lift will certainly outlast the effects of non-surgical treatments. Non-surgical procedures can only temporary resolve the issue and require few to several attempts or treatment appointments. The presence of banding down the front of the #neck, and, amount of excess skin and condition of your skin are among some factors which determine if you are a #candidate for #rejuvenating the neck.
During your initial examination, your chin will be evaluated along with the neck and jawline. A weak #chin implies a lack of chin support for the skin along the neck line. In younger individuals a chin implant alone is usually all that is needed to improve the appearance of the neck. Subsequently, it will also improve the overall #balance of the face and can create the illusion of a smaller nose. As a stand-alone procedure, chin augmentation can be performed in the office under local #anesthesia. For individuals with signs of #aging in the neck, a chin implant added to one of the recommended procedures above, will provide optimal results. Liposuction under the chin is also another option your doctor can discuss.However, there may be additional options to improve the appearance of your concern to improve the overall balance of your face. Such can be best evaluated in-person. I would say the best treatment option to reduce the fat under your chin would be liposuction.  This procedure can remove the most amount of fat in a single procedure and should help with your issue.

At age 50, the determining factor upon which procedure to perform will depend upon the laxity of the  the skin in your neck. Most patients who are less than 50 years of age can accomplish with a neck lift procedure . In our practice, this procedure involves removal of the fatty deposits above and below the muscle and a platysma-plasty. There is no skin removal. Over age 50, a lower face and neck is required which accomplishes lifting the jowls and tightening loose facial and neck skin.
