I have this fat pad on my sacrum and it seems to be growing bigger, and getting uncomfortable and painful although I live a healthy life style. I’m 18 years old. Differences after lipo?

SaraI appreciate your concerns and discomfort, however liposuction is rarely covered by insurance, even if used to alleviate pain in the area treated. Your area of lipodystrophy is fairly common and easily treated with traditional liposuction. Costs vary from city to city, however one area of liposuction usually runs between $3000 and $5000 in the New York City region. Consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area for a full evaluation. Thank you for your photo. Unfortunately insurance will not cover liposuction of the fat pad. It is best to have an in-office evaluation to get an accurate quote of the price of your surgery. Since the area does not appear to be very large, you should expect a lower price than the average body liposuction. Medical insurance does not and should not pay for liposuction.Having fat has never been associated with having pain and liposuction has never helped someone with pain.Allowing unnecessary waste makes insurance premiums higher for those of us who pay for them. Medical insurance is a community fund available for those who need medical care.I am not interested in paying for other peoples liposuction and so I fully agree with current rules letting people pay for their own cosmetic surgery.If you’re having lower back pain I suggest talking to your primary care doctor and getting a work up for back pain.Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
