Can I start taking my vitamins such as iron, C , etc. 2 months before surgery?

I do not recommend increased vitamin intake unless there is documented vitamin deficiency.  You should follow you plastic surgeon's advice.  I advise my patients to STOP ALL sources of Vitamin E, e.g., Vitamin E pills, multivitamins, Slim Fast Ensure Plus, ALL HERBS, e.g. Ginko, Garlic, Ginseng, natural or health preparations e.g. bee’s pollen, protein powders, etc. 1 week before surgery.

Thanks for your question. The best person to advice you will be your specific surgeon. Patients have to get labs done before the surgery in order to see if they're in good health for surgery. Based on the labs your surgeon would be able to recommend medication if needed. You definitely have to choose your surgeon correctly and make sure that he/she has the training and experience to meet your goals with absolute safety.  A key quality indicator is Board Certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  Don’t settle for less than a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with specialized expertise in this procedure.

The Supplement Industry is a multi-billion dollar fraud, with no evidence yet of improved health or disease prevention. Outside of folate for pregnant women and iron for anemic patients, all other vitamins are unnecessary. 

Unless patient have certain vitamin deficiency, there is no data to show that taking vitamins and over-the-counter "natural" ingredients will in any way improve recovery or result of surgery. On the contrary, there are over 300 over-the-counter preparations (Saint John's Worth, green tea, etc.) that increases bleeding and bruising after surgery. Staying of any medically unnecessary ingredients (unless approved by your physician and/or surgeon) 2-3 weeks before surgery is recommended. Good luck.

some plastic surgeons will recommend you supplements prior to surgery, others won't. Every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.

Taking a high quality vitamin should be fine to take, however you should make sure that the vitamins do not have vitamin E in them 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after surgery as it is a blood thinner. This is something you should discuss with your board certified plastic surgeon. Good luck.

Hi! thank you for your inquiry. It is generally advised to stop all medications a few weeks prior to surgery. It is not necessary to take any supplements unless there is a proven defiency. I advice you to see a board certified plastic surgeon so that an evaluation of your specific case can be done, being so that it is necessary to take labs in order to know if it is needed.
