I had juvederm injected into my n/l folds and the affects only lasted two days. After two days my n/l folds return to how they was before the injections. I went back to the doctor who saw my gums and stated that because I have a active gum disease my immune system might have absorbed the filler and that could be the reason that it only lasted for two days. Is this possible or is there another reason why it only lasted for two days.

Answer: Juvederm resorption If you have juvederm injected, and had enough put in to create a difference, it should not go away in 2 days no matter what you have going on. If you have a very deep fold, it can be that the difference is subtle and you may just not notice the improvement. For that reason we often do not recommend trying to fill a very deep fold. If you have active gum disease with an infection, you are at higher risk of developing an infection in and around the filler. Also the inflammation may make it resorb a little faster, but not in 2 days.

Answer: Does having active gum disease decrease the amount of time that a filler such as Juvederm lasts. Prior to having facial fillers I recommend that individuals with active gum disease see a dentist and be treated. Oral gum disease is a biofilm which is secondary to bacteria that induce an inflammatory response. Although the inflammation induced by the biofilm may induce proteases as well as hyaluronidase which could decrease the life of any hyaluronic acid filler such as Juvederm this should not occur as rapidly as you describe. There may be some initial swelling that goes away in a couple of days. However, I believe the biggest risk from active gum disease is that it may predispose to facial biofilms with an filler.
