Dry skin patches near T incisions. Any thoughts? (Photo)

Question

I had breast lift with implants last summer. My incision opened and took 2-3 months to heal. About month 5 after healing was complete I noticed dry skiin and itching near incisions. My providers nurse said it looked like a fungal infection and advised to use antifungal cream for 7-10 days. It still has not cleared up.any thoughts?

Areas of dry skin and flaking this far after your surgery are not normal. It’s difficult to diagnose anything from a series of photos so I would recommend strongly that you see a dermatologist who could do some shave biopsies of the area to definitively tell you what this is so that targeted treatment could be applied. I understand your concern. However, without a proper assessment, it would be difficult to determine what is wrong. It is best that you visit your plastic surgeon for further assessment or ask for a second opinion. Only after a thorough examination, you can get proper recommendations and advice.

I would suggest seeing a dermatologist and perhaps doing a biopsy of that area in order to be able to get a diagnosis so you can get an accurate treatment plan. Just applying creams without having a diagnosis is not the best way to proceed.

Just based on your photos, it appears that you have psoriasis. I would suggest meeting with a dermatologist and discussing this.

Based on the posted photos, I recommend a dermatologic evaluation to rule out fungal infection potential skin issues as psoriasis or status post hyper pigmentation of area due to poor healing. After the dermatologist has evaluated you, I might seek laser treatment to help lighten the discolored area? Good luck.

I think it’s unfortunate that you weren’t seen by your plastic surgeon for your postoperative visit.
Relying on a nurse to make an assessment regarding issues after surgery is not a good standard of care for ideal.
That said your nurse had a pretty good point.
 if you’re not getting the care you need from your provider which is what it sounds like consider cons with a dermatologist to get a more definitive diagnosis of what’s going on with your skin.
Fungal issue seems legit, but I think a dermatologist might be able to diagnose and treat better.
